Dodger boys take down Redbirds

Matthew Pittz found the range from three point land and Dillon Garthwaite found it from the free throw line to help the Dodgeville boys basketball team over Darlington 69-59 in a non-conference game Monday.
Pittz hit five shots for the night, all from beyond the arc, and finished with 15 points. His trio of threes the first half got the Dodgers off to a 30-22 halftime lead. Garrett Busch added six the first half and Chandler Batchelor five.
Garthwaite, who put in three of four free throws the first half, added 18 points the second half, was nine of 11 from the line along with a three pointer and three two pointers.
Darlington used a 9-0 run starting at the seven minute mark and lasting until 4:12 that pulled them within three at 54-52. That continued to be the margin until Garthwaite went on a seven for eight free throw run in the last 1:01 when the Redbirds had to foul. That sent the game into the 10 point finale.
Gartwaite's 21 led the Dodgers followed by 15 from Pittz and 11 by Busch.
The game was moved up because of an impending winter weather advisory. The start time was 4:45 pm.
"It felt a little odd starting at 4:45 due to the weather coming in but I am glad we got the game in," said Dodgeville coach Matt McGraw. "It was another night where Dillon Garthwaite and Matthew Pittz did their thing, scoring double digits, but tonight the third was Garrett Busch. He had some timely dribble drive attacks and finishes that extended our lead."
"Dillon played a really good second half and finished 9 of 11 from the free throw line to basically seal the deal," McGraw said.
"Though Chandler Batchelor didn't have as many offensive stats tonight he did alter a huge amount of shots in the paint," added McGraw."
Hunter Handyman, an Edgewood College recruit, was a handful all night for the Dodger defenders and led the Redbirds with 21 points. Carver Fitzsimons added 14 and Will Murray 10.
"Hardyman for Darlington played very well," said McGraw. "We had Garrett and Ayden Halverson face-guarding him for most of the night and he still made some tough shots. I actually thought that we played pretty good defense on him and made him take some tough shots but he still converted on many of them."
McGraw added that the team's depth played a big role in the win.
"Dylan Wasley, Charlie Keith, and Ayden Halverson all came off the bench and we didn't lose a beat," McGraw said. "It is nice to have the depth we do to keep guys fresh without dropping off a whole lot."
McGraw added one more player to the list of contributors.
"Drake McVay came in for a stretch tonight and gave some solid minutes including some rebounds, which was an area that was lacking a little tonight."
At last weekend seeding meeting the Dodgers received the #1 seed and will play Friday against the winner of the #9 Richland Center at #8 River Valley who will play Tuesday.
