Along The Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

I haven't told any driving stories lately, but the other day I was heading back from the north end of town, coming down (south) Union Street. As I approached the intersection of North Street a vehicle stopped at the stop sign there. I was close enough to see the driver look both ways, but she pulled out right in front of me. I had to hit the brakes really hard to stop and not hit the vehicle. It's a good thing the roadway was cleared and not Icy! Above is what could've happened!

Another thing that amazes me is when I am heading south on Highway 23 (Bequette Street) around the Kwik Trip North area and am driving a little above the speed limit of 25 MPH and pull over into the right hand lane and a vehicle behind me speeds up and goes by me to be in front of me. We both travel down the hill there approaching the main drag and the person in front of me slows down to 25 MPH. What did they gain?

Saturday Bob, Terry, Dave and I made the trip to Anita's in Arena for breakfast. It's always good to see Soffit, his wife and daughter (Anita) who the restaurant is named after. He was the former cook at the Dodgeville Truck Stop and a good one! We had our usual amazing waitress. Her son is now six years old. That speaks for the length of time we have been going there as he wasn't born yet when we were first there. In fact, she wasn't expecting yet! Anita seated us. After we finished eating I went to say hello to Soffit and Anita was standing there. When he said "Hi Mike" she suddenly remembered me. I reminded her that I remember when she was so high, and I gestured about three feet off the floor, and commented that was a few years ago. She said that it was probably about 15 years ago. They were really busy when we got there, but Soffit got the food out really fast!

When we arrived at Anita's a fellow seated with a bunch of guys said, "Playing ball today?" I said it would be really nice - let's play two!

It's still up in the air if the Major League baseball teams will have pitchers and catchers report at their usual time in February. The players are on strike. I think it will be settled just in time for the spring training season to start, but who knows!

Somebody inquired here about the pine trees on Brue Road, just west of Dodgeville, being removed in part. That's the Hallada Subdivision that going in at that spot. The trees had to be removed to make way for a road that has been formed now.

This Saturday is the Annual Dean Olson Memorial Highland Lions Club Fisheree that is held at Blackhawk Lake, between Cobb and Highland off of Highway 80. There are a lot of things going on besides fishing and the pavillion will be hopping with raffles, an auction, euchre playing and meat paddles plus more. The forecast looks to be nice with temperatures in the mid 20s and some sun, but remember this is Wisconsin!
