Dodgers pull away from Thunderbirds in second half

For four minutes of the second half Monday the Baraboo girls basketball team acted like they had a shot at tripping up the Dodgers.
The Thunderbirds trimmed a 10 point 37-27 difference to a two point game after a 10-2 run keyed by Kadence Funmaker.
Then freshman Ava Garthwaite scored in the lane, Riley Forsyth put in a couple free throws and Lily Weigel drilled a three to get the score back to eight. That was followed by a basket by Marly Busch in the lane and two more throws by Riley Forsyth that gave the Dodgers a 12 point advantage.
The game ended with a comfortable 12 point win by the Dodgers 52-40.
The win sent the Dodgers against New Glarus on Tuesday.
The Dodgers went deep into their line-up with nine of the 10 girls who played getting into the scorebook. Busch led with 13, Maggie White added 11 and Weigel pumped in 10.
"We wanted to give extended playing time for our younger players to give them some experience and help with our depth," said Dodgeville coach Josh Busch. "I felt they did a pretty good job of staying focused, getting around the basket for rebounds and playing defense."
Busch added that it has been about three weeks since the girls saw game action with a couple games cancelled so he knew it would take awhile for the girls to get back up to speed.
"I thought we defended pretty well once we got past an up and down start," Busch said. "Our subs did a nice job. The Forsyth twins and Ava Garthwaite got after it on the boards and helped us extend our possessions. Julia Thompson did a good job running the show when she was in there and Rayona Kitelinger always plays hard and with energy. Emma Blume scored for us and was tough inside."
"Then our first group got going after they got back in it," Busch said, "The girls did a pretty good job overall."
