Dodgers sending three to Sectionals

Dodgeville's Reid Spurley kept his unbeaten mark going at 38-0 and Charlie Meudt and Mason Winch avenged losses from last week's SWAL/ASWC CLASH to advance to Sectional wrestling competition this Saturday in Richland Center.
Spurley stayed perfect wrestling at 113, Meudt (106) goes in at 29-2 adnd Winch (170) carries a 24-14 log to Sectional.
The Dodgers wrestled without competitors at 145 and 195 and finished fifth out of seven teams.
Prairie du Chien, SWC champions, won their own Regional and represented the SWAL at Team Sectional Tuesday night at River Valley.
Three Dodgeville wrestlers got through the tough Prairie du Chien Regional and will take the mat Saturday at the Richland Center sectionals in hopes of advancing to the WIAA Individual State Meet the following weekend at the Kohl Center.
Charlie Meudt won the 106 title, Reid Spurley won at 113 while Mason Winch finished second at 170.
Winch, who Dodgeville coach Ryan Lord calls an outstanding leader and a wrestler whose motor refuses to stop running, will have a tough opening match with an undefeated opponent.
But Lord feels Winch is in a good positon to take the next step.
"He is wrestling the best he has this season," Lord said. "He took the Regional champion to the wire and he does not know the meaning of the word, quit. His motor keeps on running and he deserves to have the chance to advance."
Meudt, who went to state last year as a freshman is also at his best right now and seems to be over his injuries.
"He looked awesome all day," Lord said. "He dominated with his takedowns and positioning. He avenged his loss last week at the CLASH with Ethan Aird and may be meeting him again this week. He has established his level of confidence and knows how to put on the pressure."
Reid Spurley dropped to 113 for the Regionals and went from being one of the smallest at 120 to one of the biggest at 113. He is undefeated on the season.
"He did a good job staying on top," Lord said. "He will see some good kids at the Sectionals but he has a chance to win decisively."
The Dodgers had the most wrestlers compete that they have had all year in the Regionals,
-120 Lucas Crook
"It was good to get him some more mat time," Lord said. "It was good to get him experience at the Regionals level."
-126 Caden Zumbrunner
"He had a chance to win his first match but didn't," Lord said. "We will work at getting him fired up at the start of the match and he will keep on getting better."
-132 Colin Judd
"Colin was in a tough weight class but fought his way to 6th place," Lord said. "It was good experience for him."
-138 Thomas Lundell
Lundell has battled injuries to his head (concussion), knee and now a broken nose last Saturday that ended his season.
"Thomas could not catch a break this season but he was willing to give it a shot last Saturday," Lord said. "It was a tough season for Thomas."
-152 John Qually
John has had to sit out much of the season as he was recovering from a leg injury sustained in football.
"It was nice to be able to get him some mat time," Lord said. "I am glad he was finally able to get some matches."
-160 Jack Heimerl
"Jack looked good and he is still learning," Lord said. "He is long, strong and just needs more mat time and awareness,"
-182 Sean Reilly
Sean is in his first year of wrestling and finishes the season 11-9.
"Sean couldn't wrestle until January because of an injury but he stayed with it and became a good wrestler with huge improvements," Lord said. "He needs more mat time and I am glad we have him for another year. It was remarkable what he was able to do this season."
-220 Sean Jones
Sean was injured much of the season but came back to try at the Regionals.
"He is a talented kid with loads of ability," Lord said. "He just needs work."
-285 Brighton Judd
The lone senior on the team finished his career at Regionals with a quick pin in his final match
"He had a heck of a career for us," said Lord. "It was a turn here or a turn there that often made the difference. He looked very good last Saturday,"
About Sectionals at Richland Center Lord said there will be some tough match-ups but he feels all three wrestlers have a chance to advance to the state meet.
"I know they will keep on working hard this week," Lord said.
