There has to be one constant in every close win that keeps things steady and exerts a calming influence.
Tuesday at Sauk Prairie it was Dodgeville senior Dillon Garthwaite who answered the call again and again when things were heading south for the Dodgers.
Garthwaite finished with 24 points, 17 in a back and forth second half where he made all eight of his free throw attempts.
The Sauk Prairie Eagles stayed the course until they got the lead and were up seven with seven minutes to go. But Garthwaite kept the Dodgers in comeback mode and put in half their second half points.
Sauk had a last chance in the last six seconds but they could not get off a shot.
Garthwaite's 24 led all scorers. Sauk was led by Connor Brickl with 14, Corbin Waldrup with 13 and Devin Kerska with 12.
"Tonight we faced some advisory in the second half but we were able to overcome it and get the win,"said coach Matt McGraw. "We dug ourself a bit of a hole over midway through the second half with turnovers, missed opportunities and missed shot. We found ourselves down 7 with about 7 minutes to go. We were able to battle back and take the lead back."
"Although we made it more interesting than we could have late we got the close win," McGraw added. "It's important to find a way to win and we did just that against a very solid team."
The Dodgers are at River Valley tonight.
