Slow start by Dodgers sends Redbirds to win

After a lay-off with two recent games getting cancelled by weather it was no doubt Dodgeville's boys basketball team might be a little rusty when they were able to get a game in.
Rusty could be one way to describe their 61-48 loss to Darlington in a non-conference game Tuesday. The SWAL host team never let the Dodgers get untracked.
The Redbirds used a double team with a defender fronting and behind 7-2 Chandler Batchelor, making it hard for him to get involved in the offense.
They also trapped the guards out front and sagged when someone drove. It was the perfect storm to keep the Dodgers out of their game plan.
"It was a really slow start for us," said Dodgeville coach Matt McGraw.
Using a patient offensive attack and concentrating on taking the best shot possible the Redbirds cruised to a 31-19 lead at halftime. Brady Long put in all 14 of his points during the first 18 minutes and Carver Fitzsimons added seven of his 14.
Batchelor was the only offensive threat the fist half with eight of his 10.
"We did not respond to the pressure we knew they were going to put on," said McGraw. "Old habits die hard but when good teams pressure us we go back to some bad habits at times. We will continue to grow and continue to work."
The Dodgers had a couple spurts the second half but they were answered many times by a three pointer from the Redbirds who came up with an 8-1 difference from behind the arc. Matthew Pittz had the lone three for the Dodgers which came in the first half.
"After falling behind early we did make a couple okay runs at them. Our guys certainly did not quit," McGraw added.
Matthew Pittz led the Dodgers with 11 points while Lacardar Walker and Batchelor both added 10.
Fitzsimmons and Long both led the Redbirds with 14 while Reagan Jackson put in 13.
The Dodgers are scheduled to host Evansville tonight in a non-conference game.
"We are expecting better times ahead," McGraw said.
