River Ridge catches Cardinals then wins in overtime

If it doesn't work the first time don't be afraid to try again.
That just may have been what was going through 5-3 sophomore guard Braylyn Quick's thoughts when she hit what proved to be the winning shot in River Ridge's 53-50 win over Highland in overtime Friday. The game was a make-up snowed out earlier in the week.
With two seconds left Quick received a dish from a teammate who had rebounded her missed three pointer a tick before. Quick wasted no time in squaring up again behind the arc and letting a shot fly. This time it found its way through the bottom of the net.
Highland took two time outs to set the final play where they had to travel the length of the floor and get off a three that would tie the game. The Cardinals ran a screen, threw a long pass to senior scoring leader Ella Cody who launched the shot a few feet over half court that fell short as the final horn sounded, giving the TImberwolves the decision in the Six Rivers West match-up.
Highland took a 23-21 halftime lead and held the advantage until the Wolves tied it with 2:08 left when Shayna Graf put in the first of two free throws. That made the score 43 all.
Reghan Zinkle gave the Wolves a short lived lead with a rebound basket but Grace Dreischmeier fought to put in a rebound that tied it at 45-all with eight seconds left.
The Wolves had their chances at a win in regulation but missed three free throws and a last second length of the floor drive attempt.
Highland took the lead in the extra period when Bronwyn Halverson scored at 3:43. Halverson did the brunk of the work offensively for the Cardinals with 16 points.
Mandi Wehrle tied it again with a basket at 2:05.
It was Highland's turn next and Harlee Fredericks moved to the right corner and drilled a three for a 50-47 lead.
Picking up on shooting from long range, Ridge's Jessica Patterson hit a deep trifecta to knot it at 50-all.
That set up the two for one action by Quick that ended up standing firm for the win.
The Wolves had balance to their attack with 15 points from Patterson, 11 from Mandi Wehrle and 10 each from Graf and Zinkle.
"We played a pretty good basketball game," said Highland coach Josh Tarrell. "If there was a difference it would be in us not doing the little things all the time that needed to be done. We had some late turnovers, some loose balls we didn't get to, missed some good looks and didn't get to the free throw line enough (2/4)."
"Bronwyn had a good game and helped us to our lead at halftime with 12 of her 16 points," Tarrell said. "She ended up having to play with four fouls much of the second half."
"We need to have a short memory on this one as we got to SRW favorite Belmont tonight," Tarrell said. Belmont and River Ridge currently lead the SRW.
