Panthers prevail in high-scoring affair

By Levi Zimmerman
After taking its first loss of the 2022 season at the hands of Southwestern, the Iowa-Grant Panthers baseball team got back in the win column with a back-and-forth, high-scoring victory over the Boscobel Bulldogs Thursday, 14-12.
The runs came early, and Boscobel scored two in the top of the first inning; Noah Wagner hit a two RBI single that scored Noah Loos and Dylan Johnson, who both reached with base hits.
Sophomore Brach Holman got the start for Iowa-Grant on the hill and avoided a big inning with a couple strikeouts.
Loos was the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs.
Iowa-Grant also had a productive first inning offensively.
Senior Reid Lundell started with a walk and came around to score on a base hit by shophomore Ashton Schmitz; Schmitz was thrown out advancing to second base.
Loos proceeded to walk three Panthers in a row, loading the bases.
Junior Michael Cartwright stepped in the batter's box and hit a ground ball to first base where an error was committed.
Freshman Dawson Reid and junior Alex Popple scored on the play, giving Iowa-Grant a 3-2 lead.
After starting the top of the second with back-to-back punchouts, Holman gave up three straight hits, which resulted in a couple runs for Boscobel; Loos collected two RBI in the play, as Boscobel regained the upperhand.
Just like in the first inning, Holman ended the frame with a strikeout.
In the bottom half, Lundell smacked a double and then stole third base.
Lundell pulled off a steal of home as Holman walked, tying the score at four.
The Panthers took a one-run lead on a RBI single by Dawson Reid.
Iowa-Grant opened it up with six runs in the second.
Cartwight reached on an error for the second straight at-bat, scoring two runs again.
Sophmore Cyle Steffl picked up a two-RBI double, scoring Cartwright and freshman Kayden Klein, pushing the Panthers' lead to 9-4.
The Bulldogs stayed close, however, as they tallied three more runs in the top of the third inning, two coming on RBI singles and one being walked in by Holman.
In the bottom of the third, with the bases full, Reid singled on a hit into center field, scoring a run, and Klein was hit by a pitch, bringing in a run.
Iowa-Grant led 11-7 going into the top of the fourth inning.
After walking in a run, Holman was replaced by Cartwright on the mound.
Boscobel's Johnson put a ball in play and reached on another error, which scored the ninth run for the Bulldogs.
With the bases loaded, Loos hit a bases-clearing double into center field, picking up three RBI and giving Boscobel a 12-11 lead.
Cartwright ended the frame with a punchout.
After a strikeout by senior Zachary Kohlenberg, Lundell walked once more, and Schmitz brought him in with an RBI double, tying it at 12.
Finding redemption, Holman had a RBI single to give the Panthers the lead once again; Holman scored on a Boscobel fielding error.
Neither side score in the fifth and sixth innings.
In the top of the seventh, Cartwright started with a strikeout and forced a ground out.
After a walk and a hit, Boscobel had the tying run at first base, but that's as far as the runner would get, as a ground out to Schmitz at shortstop ended the game.
Iowa-Grant improved to 3-1 overall and got back to .500 in the SWAL at 1-1.
