Pointers need win Friday for post season berth

When Bodie Bossert took a pass from Joah Filardo and ran 54 yards to score it was a signal by the Mineral Point football team it was going to be a night of big plays.
Dominik McVay made sure of that.
The senior back no doubt touched most of the grass on the Fennimore football field as he scored for touchdowns and led the Pointers to a 41-6 win over the Golden Eagles.
And perhaps more importantly the win gets the Pointers one game closer to earning a berth in the post season. A win is needed Friday when the Pointers host Belleville with the win putting them in.
McVay closed out the second quarter with a 91 yard run to the endzone and a 34 yard scamper with a Filardo pass. He opened the third with a 75 yard kick-off return and tacked on a fourth quarter tally on a 75 yard pass play.
The Pointers also got a score from Tanner Goninen who caught a six yard scoring pass from Filardo.
Fennimore got a consolation score on a 15 yard pass from Max Kinney to Nathan Blaschke in the third quarter.
McVay finished the night with 107 yards on nine carries and Brenden Lynch added 32 on four tries.
Filardo was nine for 14 throwing the football for 233 yards. McVay was a big target with three grab for 119 yards. Bossert had one for 54, Leyten Bowers three for 39 an Goninen two for 11.
The offensive explosion was what coach Justin Leonard was hoping to see.
"Our guys played a very good game on Friday," Leonard said. "I think our offensive coordinator Chris Mitchell and our guy in the booth Andy Busch did a great job of making calls to put our athletes in space. Those two, along with the players, did a great job executing the plays."
And as stated earlier they were big. plays. Leonard described how they happened.
"The big plays were able to happen because of our attention to detail," Leonard said. "I thought we had a great week of preparation and the guys played with a lot of energy as well as keeping balance in our offense. As we progress each week it's harder to focus on one player."
Friday it was time to shine for some of the offensive players.
"Offensively Dominic McVay had a huge game. Joah Filardo continues to improve on his reads and execution. He did a great job stepping up all week as a leader," said Leonard..
Since a stumble a few weeks ago at Lancaster the Pointers have known their mission.
"Our team has known for two weeks we have to go 1-0 each Friday night to give ourselves an opportunity to get a playoff spot," Leonard said. "That has been a major motivation for this group and I believe that energy and sense of urgency has carried over into our Friday night execution."
While the offense was treating the fans the defense was busy shutting down the Eagles. Leonard pointed out some of the standouts.
"Brendan Lynch continues to be a force on defense," started Leonard. "Will Schute and Jaiden Galle were great on the defensive line."
Friday is perhaps the most important game of the regular season as the Pointers need a win and there is no more chances.
"Belleville is a very athletic team that can score fast," Leonard said. "They are solid on defense as well. We will need to win in all three phases of the game."
