Dodge-Point cross country teams both are SWAL champs


It happened again!
The Dodgeville-Mineral Point girls ad boys cross country teams both won a tournament - this time it was the SWC Conference Meet held in Richland Center on Thursday.
"It was a great day to be a Dodge-Point Cross Country Runner," said Dodge-Point coach Denny McGraw. "Claiming both team titles and both individual titles has not been done for a while. These student athletes have really been working hard to come together as a team. They practice hard, stay focused and want to be successful as we head into the sectional meet. All the runners have helped to make each other better throughout the season. Varsity and JV all work together to make DPCC do well."
All five girls runners finished in the top 11 and all seven were in the top 16.
Twin sisters and freshmen Ellie and Annie Robinson were 1-2 with respective times of 19:14 and 19:47.
Teammate junior Julia Thompson was third in 20:11.
Senior Haylee Kearns came in seventh in 20:56 and sophomore Regan Schuette rounded out the scoring taking 11th in 21:48.
The varsity runners rounded out with Grace Wersal taking 12th in 21:50 and freshman Addison Christopher in 16th at 22:21.
Dodge-Point finished with 24 points to runner-up Lancaster's 56.
Platteville was next with 82 followed by Prairie du Chien 111, Richland Center/Ithaca 126 and River Valley 146.
The rest of the Dodge-Point finishes were: Abbey Ludwig 18th in 22:47, Sierra Davenport 32nd in 23:50, Ava McDonald 39th in 24:13, Brooke Paynter 41st in 24:22, Mallory Spurley 55th in 26:03, Kaylee Rochon 56th in 26:17, Madelyn Bakken 57th in 26:30, Katie Kramer 66th in 27:37 and Mary Lou Gerault 75th in 30:54.
McGraw said about the girls race, "It was so exciting to see the girls claim the conference title after a dry spell. They scored 24 points, again claiming the top three spots in the race, and defeating 2nd place Lancaster with 56 points and 3rd place Platteville with 82.
"Freshmen Ellie Robinson claimed the individual title by soundly winning the girls' race. Ellie has been the top girls runner all year long for DPCC and is fun to watch. Freshmen Annie Robinson placed second and she is such a solid runner who gets the job done. Junior Julia Thompson placed 3rd and is a mentally tough runner who never backs down and finishes strong. These three girl runners are amazing to watch, and when you can go 1-2-3 in a race you just smile. We've never had such a solid performance by our three top girl runners.
"Senior Haylee Kearns placed 7th and she has made a big improvement this week and has been a great leader on the girls' team. Sophomore Regan Schuette placed 11th by running a very determined race to end up with a strong performance. Sophomore Grace Wersal finished 12th gaining confidence each race and peaking at the right time. Freshmen Addison Christopher placed 16th by having great workouts and converting it into an excellent race.
"Freshmen Abbey Ludwig finished 18th and will be the alternate on the sectional team. She helps push the other runners to do better.
"The JV girls team placed second in conference led by Abbey Ludwig. Sophomore Sierra Davenport placed 32nd, Freshmen Ava Hying 36th, Freshmen Ava McDonald 39th, Freshmen Brooke Paynter 41st. These four young runners worked well together and will continue to be a solid base for DPCC.
Freshmen Mallory Spurley placed 55th, Senior Kaylee Rochon 56th, Sophomore Madelyn Bakken 57th, Sophomore Katie Kramer 66th are fun to coach as they enjoy the sport and come with big smiles each practice. Senior Mary Lou Gerault finished 75th and is an exchange student from France who loved being with this great team and athletes."
ALL CONFERENCE
1st team : Ellie Robinson, Annie Robinson, Julia Thompson, Haylee Kearns
2nd team: Regan Schuette, Grace Wersal
McGraw added, "Thank you to the seniors who have helped the team all year long: Haylee Kearns, Kaylee Rochon and Mary Lou Gerault."
The Dodge-Point boys had finishes of 1, 2, 4, 7 and 9 to run away with their title 23-63 for River Valley.
Plattenville was next with 74, then came Lancaster 126, Prairie du Chien 128 and Richland Center/Ithaca 139.
Dodge-Point senior Will Aurit won in 17:17 with senior teammate Dylan Wasley next in 17:42.
Freshman Cody Yoder took fourth in 17:54 and fellow freshman Layne Aurit was seventh in 18;36. Junior Joey Robinson was eighth in 18:42. Senior Cal Dampf's ninth in 18:55 rounded out their scoring.
The varsity was rounded out by junior Charlie Keith taking 10th in 19:02 in his first meet of the season and senior Chandler Williams 11th in 19:10.
About the varsity boys, McGraw said, "Back to back to back! The boys' team is so excited to claim the conference title for the third year in a row by scoring 22 points followed by second place River Valley (64 points) and third place Platteville (74 points).
"The team was led by Senior Will Aurit with another outstanding run, placing 1st and taking the individual title. Will has worked extremely hard to get to the level he is at and is a great leader for the boys' team. Senior Dylan Wasley placed 2nd as a first year runner for DPCC. Dylan has really embraced the challenge of running and has improved each race to help the team do so well.
"Freshmen Cody Yoder placed 4th with an impressive finish, passing upper classmen from other teams as he sprinted down the stretch. Freshmen Layne Aurit finished 7th and continues to be an important member of the team as we move into sectionals. It is amazing to see two freshmen boys make first team all conference. Cody and Layne put in a lot of miles this summer to do so well their first year on varsity. Junior Joey Robinson placed 8th and shows good determination with an excellent race and he never gives up and will continue to push himself to do better. Senior Cal Dampf finished 10th by pacing himself well throughout the race to finish strong. He is coming on at the right time of the year.
"Junior Charlie Keith placed 11th. This was Charlie's first race of the year coming off an injury. He will continue to improve with another week of practice before sectionals. Senior Chandler Williams placed 12th and will be the alternate on the sectional team. Chandler has been an important part of the team and is an important asset as he helps push his teammates to do better."
Chandler Williams was 11th in 19:0 with Alex LaMere 18th in 19:48 followed by Chayse Helwig 19th in 19:49, Parker Owens 23rd in 19:59, Jesse Yoder 42nd in 21:56, Thomas Esch 51st in 23:12, Paul Angel 61st in 27:46 and Joey Gorgen 63rd in 24:12.
"The JV boys team won the conference led by Chandler Williams. Sophomore Alex LaMere placed 19th, Freshmen Chayse Helwig 20th, Freshmen Parker Owens 24th. These three runners have improved all year and work well together as they push each other to do better.
"Freshmen Jesse Yoder placed 43rd and Sophomore Thomas Esch 52nd. Both of these guys came out later in the season, but helped the team as they improved each race. Senior Paul Angel 62nd and Freshmen Ryan Gorgen 63rd rounded out the JV squad."

He concluded saying, "We want to thank all the parents and fans for the great support at the conference meet and throughout the entire season. We hope to see a lot of people at the sectional meet on Saturday, October 23, at the Prairie du Chien Country Club, 38485 U.S. Hwy 18, Prairie du Chien. Boys will run at 11:00 a.m., the girls at 11:45 a.m."
