When the team puts it all together and leaves it all out on the field there is no disappointment no matter who gets the W.
Friday it was #2 seed Cedar Grove-Belgium who got the W but it was the Mineral Point #7 seed that got the R and that R was Respect.
The Pointers played it well, both physically and mentally before being forced to settle for a 36-32 loss. In short, they were in it until the end.
"I was most proud of the fact that the guys played a four quarter game," said coach Justin Leonard. "They didn't let the events of the game take their emotions to highs and lows. They just kept working hard and continued to have the belief they were going to win no matter what. I can never be mad at a team that plays hard for four quarters and still comes up a little short. I was extremely proud of their effort. "
The Pointers sent CG-B the message they came to play with a score at 9:19 of the first quarter. Dominik McVay eclipsed the last two yards of a drive and Bo Hanson kicked the conversion.
The Pointers scored again at 6;11 on a 48 yard pass play--Joah Filardo to McVay and Hanson's kick made it 14-0.
CG-B got the next score on a 48 yard run by Colten Sellin and a conversion by Ethan Minick.
They were a little generous on the kick-off when they gave Leyten Bowers a lane and he raced 68 yards to score. Hanson's kick made it 21-7.
CD-B then tied it by halftime on a pair of pass plays courtesy of quarterback Logan Arrowood. His first was a four yarder to his favorite target Sam Peiffer and the second a 40 yarder to Gabe Egan. Minick kicked both conversions.
The Pointers got a field goal by Hanson from the 24 fo a 24-21 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Arrowwood scored on an 11 yard keeper and hit Caleb Beigtol for the conversion and a 29-24 lead.
The Pointers answered with a Filardo to McVay 13 yard pass play and McVay carried for two and a 32-29 lead.
But CD-B got the win on a pass play, Arrowood to Peiffer from the three and Minick kicked the conversion for the 36-32 finale.
The Arrowood to Peiffer duo was what made it tough for the Pointers. Arrowood was 27 for 38 for 274 yards with Peiffer grabbing 15 for 144 yards. Egan was next with nine for 120.
"Their quarterback and their wide receiver Peiffer were elite players," Leonard said. "We felt very comfortable with our game plan but sometimes players just make plays and those guys did. We played man on Peiffer with zone over the top, he had a great relationship with his quarterback and would break routes off when he saw he was covered. He would sit down in zones and his quarterback would find him. Hats off to those guys for their performance."
Leonard said his team's strong performance is the result of everyone taking care business.
"It's hard to pick out individuals who did well because we talked all year about how it takes all the guys in the program and those 11 on the field to be a successful football team," Leonard said. "It took 10 weeks but we finally did it as a group. We faced a lot of adversity this year but couldn't be happier with how the guys kept battling."
Leonard felt the seniors were key when it came to a very strong performance.
"I was extremely happy for our seniors as I felt their last performance was the first time all year they put it all together," the coach said. "They truly left it all on the field. They are all great kids and I hope they can take some of the lessons they learned throughout this season and can apply them to their life as they move forward into adulthood."
He added the seniors have made their mark on the Pointer program.
"These seniors have had a lot of success over the last four years. They have an overall record of 30-9. They also won two conference championships and an undefeated season last year. This senior class is one of the top senior classes when it comes to wins. We will be forever grateful for their contributions to this program. They will forever be Pointers."
