Dear Editor;
In a 2019 letter to Gov. Tony Evers, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos pledged "to work with you to meet the historic two-thirds [school] funding threshold that Assembly Republicans set as their goal for the next state budget." Now we have results of the April 2021 State Superintendent election. In response to Jill Underly's win with over 57% of the vote, Vos tweeted: "Count me as someone who isn't going to support putting another nickel into this unaccountable state bureaucracy."   
Why does Vos say the state bureaucracy is unaccountable? Because they've identified Underly as Democrat, even though it's a nonpartisan position. So now our children, our communities, and our state will likely suffer because Vos and the other Republicans in the Assembly are poor losers! Isn't it time for Vos to end his vendetta against all things Democrat - or even only what is perceived as Democrat?   
Under the continuing gamesmanship of Vos and the Assembly, Wisconsinites continue to lose on multiple fronts. Contact your Representatives and let them know that Wisconsinites support our local schools, and we expect our legislature to do the same.

GOP Leader Says He Will Break His Pledge on School Funding Because He Didn't Like the Results of an Election 
•Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) tweeted late on Tuesday that he planned to renege on a pledge he and fellow Republicans made to have the state cover two-thirds of public school funding in the next budget, solely because voters chose Jill Underly to be the next state superintendent this week instead of the conservative candidate, Deb Kerr.
•"Correctly stated that the teachers union owns the DPI [Department of Public Instruction]; not the parents or the students or the taxpayers," Vos tweeted in response to a report on the election results. "Count me as someone who isn't going to support putting another nickel into this unaccountable state bureaucracy."
•It's a flip-flop from a 2019 letter Vos and other Assembly Republican leaders sent to newly inaugurated Gov. Tony Evers, which stated, "Providing adequate resources to our public, choice, charter, and homeschooling families is a very high priority for us and we look forward to working with you to meet the historic two-thirds funding threshold that Assembly Republicans set as a goal for the next state budget."
