Dodgers turn back Belmont in non-league battle

Freshman infielder Maggie White buried a pitch from the Belmont pitcher out of the friendly confines of Wilson Park and started the trail to a 4-1 in as the Dodgeville softball team opened the 2021 season with a non-conference win.
White's blast moved the Dodgers off a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning and some Belmont errors pushed the score to the 4-1 finale. She finished the game with three hits.
Maggie White's blast gave her sister, Audrey, all the help she needed as she went the distance with a six strikeout performance.
"Maggie's home run came at a big time for us," said Dodgeville veteran coach Gene Van Dyck. "And Audrey turned in a very good mound performance. She threw a solid game against a very good Belmont team."
The Dodgers played errorless ball which did not surprise Van Dyck.
"Defense should be our strong point this season," he said. "And I think we will become a good hitting team very soon."
The defensive play of the night came from Carley Wolf who handled a line shot and threw to first to double off a runner at a critical part of the game.
"That play got us out of some trouble," Van Dyck said.
"Offensively we hit a lot of sky shots," Van Dyck said.
The varsity reserve also won with Maggie White and Cora Storkson each worked three innings.
The Dodgers host Verona tonight.
