Pointers finish 1-1 in post season

The 2020-21 Mineral Point boys basketball season came to a close at Cuba City Saturday a night after a thrilling three point win over Southwestern.
All the while the Pointers were battling on the court, little did they know they were receiving instruction from the newest member of the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. That would be veteran mentor Dan Burreson who was informed Monday he will be joining the Hall of Fame Class of 2021.
Only four Pointers scored in the win over the Wildcats who could not stop Joah Filardo, Liam Stumpf and Ian Keyes who poured in 20, 15 and 11 or in other words, all but five of the game total in the 51-48 win. Those five points, by the way, came from Dominik McVay.
The Pointers had a 23-17 lead at intermission keyed by Filardo's nine points and five from Stumpf.
The duo went on to pace the second half point total with 11 and 10.
Peerson Kephart and Nate Reiff did all they could to expand the season for the Wildcats. Kephart tossed in 13 of his 20 the second half as did Reiff who had all eight of his.
"It was a good win tonight," said Burreson after the game. "Southwestern had beaten us a couple weeks ago."
"We had a much better effort defensively and it took a team effort to make it happen," said Burreson. "Liam Stumpf, Ian Keyes and Gabe Sporle did a great job in the post and on helpside. we got great ball pressure from our guards. Cam Wiegman, Dominik McVay, Bodie Bossert. Leyten Bowers and Joah Filardo."
The Pointers also were able to put the ball in the hole frequently.
"Good nights offensively by Joah, Liam And Ian," said Burreson. "The other big key this week was our scout team who did a great job all week. Tanner Goninen, Gabe Sporle, Bryce Acherman, Gunnar Gorgen, Owen Ward, and Drew Hottenstein performed those duties."
CUBA GAME
The Pointers got to 10 first but the Cubans caught them and never looked back until the took the WIAA Division 4 Regional title 73-48.
Carter Olson led the surge the last part of the first half and had 13 of his 25 by halftime. Riley Richard added 14, Jack Miskey contributed 12 and Max Lucey 10.
In the end nine players scored for the Cubans.
"Cuba City is pretty good," said Burreson about the team that destroyed Parkview 119-59 the night before. "We battled tonight but it is tough to replicate their pressure especially on a short turnaround. Dominik McVay was really good tonight. He led us with 11 points and 10 rebounds."
Burreson summed up the COVID dominated season this way...
"I am real proud of this group and what they were able to accomplish," Burreson started. "We ended the season playing in a regional championship game. Everyone wants to play games that matter on February and our guys earned that opportunity.17 wins is a pretty good year, especially with how good our league was and how challenging a non-conference schedule we play. I thought we came together pretty well as a team especially when you consider we did not have a summer to prepare. We also survived a late start and getting some players shutdown."
"We are really going to miss our five seniors," Burreson added.
-Liam Stumpf a terrific athlete who could score inside and out. He also defended the other teams best post player
-Ian Keyes had a great senior year and became a very good three point shooter.
-Cameron Wiegman battled through some tough injuries and came back to have a really solid senior year. Cam really understands the game.
-Gabe Sporle a really good defensive player who never took a possession off.
-Gunnar Gorgen who had great court awareness. He knew where everyone was on the floor.
As for next season....
"We have a good nucleus coming back," Burreson predicts. "If guys are willing to put more time in this off-season we have a chance to do some things next year."
