Along The Ad Routes

I said last week that I hoped that I would have some good things to say about the Dodgeville High School Softball Team and their trip to the state tournament in Division 3, and I sure do! They won both games on Tuesday and are the 2021 WIAA Division 3 State Champions! It's the first state championship in softball in school history. My great-niece McKenna Reilly is just a freshman and pinch hit in both games. She was 2x2 (both singles), scored a run and drove in a run. Above are her dad (Ryan), brother Sean and grandfather Pat at the games in Green Bay - all pretty proud!

It was cousins' reunion week in Dodgeville last week. Cousin Jeanette (Marty) from Atlanta, Georgia and her daughter Melanie and granddaughter Grace from Augusta, Georgia are visiting the area. Wednesday night we met at Bob's Bitchin' BBQ for dinner. Cousin Jeanne (Halverson) from Richland Center and cousin Cathy (Schleicher) from Glen Haven were all there. Also friends Vicki and Denny Staskal were there along with cousin spouses Jack Marty and Joe Halverson plus Jack's brother and sister-in-law Ron and Cathy Marty from Platteville. That same group, minus cousin Cathy, Vicki, Denny, Ron and Cathy and Joe met at the Red Room Bar & Restaurant in Dodgeville the next day for breakfast We added cousin Jeff (Reilly) from Dodgeville and brother Pat to the mix. Both meetings were great times for conversation and catching up on peoples' lives since the pandemic began.

There will be a food stand by the Kiwanis Club with brats and hot dogs, a cheese curd stand by the Lions Club, Pleasant View 4-H pop and water, Five Point 4-H ice cream. the Upland Hills Hospital Auxiliary pies, Dodger Food Locker treats and the Iowa County Cattlemen with their famous steak sandwiches. There will be a petting zoo, garden tractor pull and other special things happening!

I missed talking about our Saturday breakfast last week. Terry, Dewey and I went to Fennimore to Frederick's, on the corner of Highways 18 and 61. Bob had a swim meet in Madison and had to head there early. Dewey hadn't been with us the last time we were there. The food was really good and the prices were almost unbelievable! It was a nice drive and we saw some good sights!

This past Saturday we decided to take a little longer trip that same direction and go to Boscobel to the "Unique Cafe." We had been there a couple of years ago and were really fascinated with all the memorabilia that was on the shelves that were placed around the entire place. We walked in and saw everything was bare on the shelves. We asked the waitress about it and she said that it was under new ownership and the owner was trying to decide what to put on the shelves. There were some "Doyle" specials on the menu, from the previous owner who is now in Florida. Again the food was very good and reasonably priced. We had a good time talking to the waitress! And when we were walking out a gentleman came running after us and said, "I though I recognized you guys when you were walking out - newspaper and True Value!" It was John Moran, former Tech Ed instructor at Dodgeville High School (20 years). He now teaches Tech Ed in Boscobel. The world gets smaller all the time!
