Congress must have leadership

Dear Editor;
January 22, 2021, will be an historic day in much of the world! After years of global organizing for the abolition of nuclear weapons, these weapons will become illegal in 122 of the 193 UN nations! In celebration of this "Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons", citizens across the globe will ring bells, hang banners, and read the treaty aloud for all to hear.
But there will be little celebration in this country. The treaty will not apply to us, or the other nuclear nations who have refused to sign it. Therefore, our collective support for nuclear weapons will continue to put all the nations of the world at risk for annihilation.
John F. Kennedy's voice of 60 years ago, still rings true: "Every man, woman and child lives under a nuclear sword of Damocles, hanging by the slenderest of threads, capable of being cut at any moment by accident or miscalculation or by madness. The weapons of war must be abolished before they abolish us."
Call on Congress to take a leadership role in negotiating the elimination of the global nuclear arson. We can be a nation of hope and new possibilities.
