Dodgers go to the wire with Sauk Prairie

With 1:06 remaining in their game Saturday with Sauk Prairie the Dodge were in pretty good shape as junior guard Garrett Busch had just sent them ahead 42-40 with a free throw.
It looked even better when Sauk's Devin Kerske could only make one of two free throws with 42 seconds left. The Dodgers were still up by one and had the ball.
But the Silver Eagles got the rock back and with less than 10 seconds on the clock Devin Breunig made a nifty move in the high post that resulted in a drive to the rim and a basket to give Sauk a 43-42 lead.
The Dodgers had one last chance and put the ball in the hands of their leading scorer Dillon Garthwaite that put up a shot that refused to go down, instead rolling around the rim and falling off to the side.
The Eagles spent the game exhibiting their cautious play that resulted in the low scoring affair. Breunig led the visitors with 11 points and Brandt Wilson added 10.
Matthew Pittz and Garthwaite led the Dodgers with 13 and 12 points.
"We went down early after a slow start but made a good run just before half to cut their lead to seven" said coach Matt McGraw. "We continued to battle and took the lead with about 3:00 to play. It was back and forth until the final second."
McGraw reconstructed the final minute of play.
"We were up two with a minute to go. At 43 seconds they drew a shooting foul and made one.
"On our possession we got in a little trouble so we called time out.
"On the sideline out of bounds play a questionable block call was called which gave Sauk the ball
"They ran a nice set play to score with about seven seconds left
"We pushed it hard and got a great look at the buzzer from about 8 feet but it rimmed out."
"I am really proud of how we battled back," said McGraw. "We showed some grit and like Coach Keith said after the game we are forming an identity on the defensive end of the ball. I don't think the 6-1 Sauk team thought they would have such a hard fought game, especially after our slow start."
"I'm not a big believer in moral victories but I am a big believer in learning from these games," McGraw added. "I think our team is learning that when we step on the court we can play with anyone. This is a good team we played and gave them all they could handle."
