In WIAA Regional semifinal play, the Dodgeville boys basketball team lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Belleville on Tuesday, 75-67.
Belleville's duo of twins Trevor Syse and Carson Syse caused issues for the Dodgers all night long.
The pair averages 18 and 12 points per game, respectively, according to WSN.
After jumping out to a quick lead, Dodgeville struggled with turnovers and were looking at a 13-5 deficit.
Trevor Syse then hit back to back three-pointers to give Belleville a 21-10 advantage with 10:07 left in the first half.
The Dodgers battled back with consecutive scores by LaCarder Walker and Casey Weier.
After sinking a pair of free throws, Weier came up with a steal that resulted in a layup in transition with 1:50 remaining in the first half.
The score at the break was 35-24, Belleville.
Both sides traded scores in the first several minutes of the second half, until Carson Syse nailed back to back threes to give Belleville a 15 point lead.
Dodgeville rallied with a pair of three-pointers by Weier and one by Matthew Pittz to come within eight with 5:11 left in the game.
Dillon Garthwaite hit a two-point jumper at the 3:40 mark to bring the Dodgers within six at 54-48.
The Dodgers had consecutive scores again with a Pittz three followed by a Weier steal and score with 2:25 remaining to cut the deficit to 56-53.
Then with 38 seconds left, Belleville's Trevor Syse was called for an offensive charge.
Syse picked up his fifth foul as a result and was out of the game.
The scoreboard showed 60-57, in favor of Belleville, and Dodgeville had possession of the ball.
The Dodgers looked for an open shot, and with seven seconds left, Garthwraite found Weier in the corner for a three- the shot was good to tie the game.
Belleville's Anthony Nolden hoisted a three-pointer as the clock expired, but it was no good.
The game went into overtime notched at 60.
Dodgeville had the first possession in overtime, and Walker made a drive to the goal for a two to give the Dodgers their first lead of the game since 15:59 in the first half.
Belleville responded by going on a nine point run in just over one minute that included six points by Gavin Boyum and a three-point play by Nolden.
With a seven point lead and two minutes left in overtime, the Wildcats were in no rush.
They passed the ball around the perimeter and waited for Dodgeville to foul.
Dodgeville did foul and Belleville converted enough free throws to escape with an eight point win.
"Not the way we wanted a successful season to end, but overall I am proud of our team tonight and the way we played throughout the season," Head Coach Matt McGraw expressed after the game.
The Dodgeville boys will miss Weier and Jacobson, but will look to mesh the younger players together to look toward the future.
"The guys grew up a lot as a group, and I believe things would have looked even more positive if we would have had a regular off season to grow together; As a young team, we really needed that time together," McGraw stated.
Despite the odds against them, Dodgeville has shown what they are capable of.
"We were picked by many to place in last or second to last and we finished second, having a chance to win the conference right up until the last couple of days," McGraw said.
The Dodgers ended the season with 13 wins and a second place finish in SWC play.
