It was almost like asking one person to the dance and showing up with another.
Dodgeville's boys basketball team had that happen with SWC opponent Lancaster had to quarantine and their Thursday night game was postponed. So, Oregon stepped in at the last minute and not only gave the Dodgers an opportunity to play but a chance to find out more about themselves.
The Dodgers limped to a 19 point performance the first half while Oregon was easing to a 14 point lead. The second half saw a different team take the court and while it wasn't a storybook ending, it was getting close enough to pull out a win as they closde the gap to 59-55 before time expired.
Dillon Garthwaite put up nine points the final 18 minutes while Garrett Busch contributed eight and Charlie Keith seven to make it a battle.
The Panthers had a comfortable 55-48 lead until Garrett Busch scored on a drive to make it 55-50 with 2:44 left to play. LaCarder Walker followed with a basket that made it a three point game.
Deaken Bush then scored for Oregon from underneath to widen the game with 1:37 remaining.
But the Dodgers had one gasp left as Garrett Busch put in the second of two free throws and Dillon Garthwaite took advantage of a Panther turnover to score in the lane with 38 seconds left to make it a two point game.
Both teams traded turnovers until Oregon's Bush was fouled and made both ends of a bonus to end it at 59-55.
Deaken Bush led Oregon with 19 points and Casey Schoenecker added 11.
Garthwaite paced the Dodger with 15 points and Garrett Bush contributed 10.
"It was a tough first half where shots wouldn't fall and we couldn't find a flow which created a pretty big hole for us to dig ourselves out of," said Dodgeville coach Matt McGraw. "With 13:00 to go in the game we fell behind by 19. Then we put on a great run."
The run was not only keyed by some nifty shooting though.
"We used pressure and transition along with better ball movement in our half court offense to get ourselves back into it," said McGraw. We pulled within two and had a couple chances to tie before ultimately losing by four."
"Charlie Keith and LaCarder Walker played well together putting on a lot of pressure, getting steals and creating transition for themselves and others," McGraw said. "I was happy with our effort in them last 13 minutes. Because of the chaos of the game we made a few mistakes by forcing the ball offensively, instead of getting great looks. It's a tough thing to do, ask for all out crazy pressure defense on one end and then tell them to be calm and collected on the other. The real good teams are able to do it and we will get there."
"Matthew Pittz sparked us in the first half offensively when we really needed it and Garrett, Dillon and LaCarder all had a solid second half on the offensive end of the court."
"For only having a few games Oregon really shot the ball well. They had 12 threes and had only had that many on the season up until this point," said McGraw. "If we get to a point where we can play as hard as we did in the second half for an entire game we are going to be tough to beat."
