Pointer girls roll over River Valley, hit 23 3's

By Levi Zimmerman
The Mineral Point Pointers, of the SWAL, hosted the River Valley Blackhawks, of the SWC, for a non-conference girls basketball game that ended with the Pointers being the decided victor, 89-23.
It was never really closely contested, as Mineral Point started pouring in the three-point field goals with the first one made by Mallory Lindsey followed by three more from Ella Chambers.
The Pointers harassed the Blackhawks defensively with their full-court press, which River Valley struggled to beat.
The Blackhawks scored just once in the first 13 minutes of the game which was an inside score by Charlotte Ferstl.
After the score, Mineral Point went on an impressive 40-point run that included five three-pointers.
In the post, Mineral Point's Katelyn Cox and Kennedy Wenger controlled the rebounding game, and Cox scored six straight points at the end of the run.
River Valley's Kora Eberle made a three-point shot later in the first half to answer a three-pointer made by Mineral Point's Laci Lindsey.
The Pointers led by a score of 52-10 after the first half and went on a 17-point run to start the second.
Freshman Ella Kroll came off the bench for Mineral Point and drilled back-to-back three-pointers; she went on to make two more on the night.
It was also a big night for sophomore Brea Goninen.
Goninen sank a three-point field goal to tally her first career points.
River Valley's Ferstl added eight more points in the second half to reach double digits in scoring with 10, which was a team-best.
The Pointers made a record-breaking 20 three-point field goals Tuesday night.
With the win, Mineral Point moved to 3-0 on the season, which all came against SWC opponents.
River Valley was handed their second loss of the season and moved to 0-2, which both came to SWAL opponents.
