Dodger girls pick up first win at Heights

McKenna Reilly found her stroke Tuesday and led the Dodgeville girls basketball team past Wisconsin Heights for their first win in three tries 51-46.
Reilly, a sophomore guard, put up a pair of 10 point halves for her game leading total. Fellow sophomore Maggie White was next with eight points and freshman Ava Garthwaite added seven.
The Dodgers were aggressive on the defensive end and their 20 fouls allowed the Vanguards to hang around as they made 20 of 30 free throws. Their leading scorer was Kylee Dougherty with eight.
The Dodgers are still without returning sophomore starter Marley Busch who injured her ankle in the season opener but they are using a variety of rotations to fill in during her absence.
Dodgeville coach Josh Busch saw some good things from his young squad in the win.
I was impressed with how the girls bounced back after Friday night's loss to Mineral Point," Busch said. "I thought we played with more purpose on offense, and I think out shot selection was better for the most part."
He also liked what he saw on the other end of the court.
"Defensively I really liked our intensity," he said. "We still have a ways to go as far as understanding everything, but we play hard and I love that. Our athleticism really shows at times on the defensive end and we just need to combine that with understanding and we will be really good on that end of the floor."
"Offensively we got a lift from McKenna Reilly," the coach added. "She was able to knock down some shots and finish around the rim and we need that from her. We had a lot of kids contribute with balanced scoring and that makes it tough for teams to game plan. Every night it could be someone different making shots and contributing."
"Maggie White has been playing well on both ends," continued Busch. "Her shots are not falling but they will. Also Emma Blume gives us a toughness we need inside."
