The way the Highland girls basketball team started their game at Fennimore Monday was just what the coach ordered.
The Cardinals rolled to a 10-0 lead before the Golden Eagles called time out then the Cardinals went up 16-5. The Eagles got those five points on a three pointer by Keligh Dresen and a banker from Deelanee Klaas.
The Cardinals closed out the half with a 6-0 run and a 22-5 lead.
But while the Cardinals never looked back in their 45-16 win they did hit a stretch where the ball refused to go in.
"Good looks, small rim," was how coach Josh Tarrell looked at the cold snap.
Fennimore made some adjustments but were never able to mount a threat.
Nine girls scored for Highland and were led by senior Katelyn Mueller who dropped in 12 points and Meg Tarrell who added 10.
"Katelyn had a nice game," Tarrell said. "She took good shots and got to the rim."
Tarrell was glad he was able to get a good amount of playing time for a number of girls.
"We got to work on some of our rotations which let us get a look at different girls," Tarrell said.
One of the girls he mentioned was senior Chloe Campbell who came in, took a charge and made one of two free throws.
"She did a good job with her playing time," said Tarrell.
The only down side of the game was an injury to starter Katelyn Esser. She tweaked her shoulder early in the game and sat out as a precaution.
"We hope to have her back for our game at River Ridge Friday," Tarrell said.
