Along The Ad Routes

Saturday Bob, Terry and I took Dennis Kopps with us to Arena for breakfast to Anita's. Dennis turned 76 Wednesday and we wanted to treat him! We all had an omelette with hashbrowns and toast. It was huge and very good! Anita's is owned by the cook at the former Dodgeville Truck Stop. I knew him from there. We also like to check on the waitress and her (now) 5 year old son!

I watched part of some very fun NCAA Women's Basketball games Saturday afternoon. There are some very talented collegiate women playing that sport. I was pulling for #5 Michigan to beat #2 Baylor, but a couple of questionable calls late in that overtime game didn't go Michigan's way.

I also watched some of the Professional Golf Match Play Tournament. I know, many say watching golf is like watching paint dry, but I golfed from age 11 until around 55. I was on Dodgeville High School's first golf team in 1962 as a sophomore. We only had myself and Mike Collins who wanted to golf as freshmen, but back then you had to have five to form a team to be part of the WIAA. So we had to wait until several freshmen came in the next year to form a team. I like to watch the pros just to see how I should've swung, shifted my weight and really have done things right.

Surfing the internet sometimes is good for something. The other day I ran across a video about a Davenport, Texas High School kid who scored an 80 yard touchdown. What was so good about that is Gage Dunivan has cerebral palsy. He wasn't suppose to live, let alone walk/run like he did that day. At their homecoming game the coach called for the "Gage Special" play. He took a handoff on the 20 yard line. He was supposed to run just a few yards and the teams cleared a path for him. Both teams cheered him on as he navigated the distance. He kept chugging along and somehow made it to the end zone, falling/diving into a teammate's arms who waited for him to score! There was applause by both teams, benches and fans. I tear up every time I watch it or think about it. Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age.

We lost someone very dear to me when Margaret (McGraw) Lawinger passed away the other day. I knew her since high school. She was a year ahead of me, in brother Pat's class of 1963. She was the oldest of (like a mother) Kathryn McGraw, the famous pie maker! I couldn't even begin to count the number of people Margaret served during her many years of waitressing, most famous at the Don Q Inn and Courthouse Inn.

Sunday is Easter. It is also brother Pat's birthday, so we're having a dual celebration at his daughter Amy's house near Cobb. That is the former home of my 5th grade teacher Mary Ellen (Roy) Cherry. It is a beautiful residence that I had a chance to be at once when they lived there years ago!
