Cardinals give Ridge a test

Highland came close but could not pull off the upset against one of the conference favorites, River Ridge, Tuesday.
It was the opener for both teams and they both came in under the same conditions which are a week of practice, no scrimmages and no pre-league tournaments.
But there was some very good volleyball played by both teams, even though the Cardinals came up short.
Scores were 25-22, 25-22 and 25-11.
While the scores were close Highland coach Maria Wineski saw a little glitch that could have made a difference.
"We would get to points 17 or 18 then start to play not to lose instead of playing to win," she said. "We came our ready though and were very close to a good team."
Wineski said the Cardinal hitters played well but River Ridge got too many touches and were able to fend off the hits.
"Our setters did a good job moving the ball around which was a plus," Wineski said.
"River Ridge is a tough team to open with," she said. "But now we know what we have to do to iron out the wrinkles. We can clean things up and I have faith the team will do that.:
The Cardinals ran a 6-2 which employed two setters who split the assists. Estee Goodwiler had a dozen assists and Harper Drury 11.
Junior Malayna Frederich was the kill leader with eight. Myah Hennessey had five kills, an ace and six digs. Katelyn Mueller, Katelyn Esser and Rachel Miller had four kills. Libero Macey Krasinger had four digs and an ace.
The Cardinals are strong in the hitting department and will be stronger when Meg Tarrell comes back in a couple weeks from a foot injury.
"She will help us when she returns," said Wineski.
The Cardinals are on the road tonight at Benton.
