Bryce Hillers was a busy man for the Richland Center Hornets Friday and played a big part in handing visiting Dodgeville a 35-0 loss.
Hillers not only scored three of the five Hornet touchdowns he also kicked all the extra points while handling all the kicking duties.
He put 14 points on the board the first quarter starting with a five yard burst then adding a 58 yard blast.
The second quarter was filled with penalties and to Dodgeville's credit a pair of interceptions by Garrett Busch but there was also a pair of Dodger fumbles that stopped drives.
The third quarter started with a penalty on the first play then thing seemed to settle down and Hillers found the end zone again. His third score was another big play as he carried the ball 42 yards.
For the game Hillers had 14 carries for 208 yards with Aaron Davis adding 62 on 10 tries and quarterback Konner Ellenson 56, also with 10 carries.
Ellenson tallied a fourth quarter score on a five yard run and Davis sent it to continuous clock with a four yard run with 5:11 left.
Dodgeville was able to limit the Hornets to 15 yards passing as Ellenson was two for eight.
"We knew they were going to run the ball for the most part, but we also knew we had to be ready for their play action pass game," said Dodgeville coach Josh Busch. "I thought we did a nice job of pressuring Ellenson and covering receivers. Garrett made a nice play on the first interception and the second he ended the scoring threat at the end of the half so those were two big momentum plays for us."
While the Dodgers did not completely stop the run game by the Hornets they did slow it some.
"I thought we did a much better job of tackling this game," Busch said. "That was a focus of practice last week, although our gap integrity was not great this week we are getting better. I think if we clean that up we will be able to contain the run much better."
The Dodgers were shorthanded for the game which caused some personnel shifts. They also lost three players to injury during the game.
"We had two out because of contact tracing and three got hurt during the game," Busch said. "We should get one back from contact tracing, the other will miss the rest of the year most likely. As for those injured we will see what this week brings and how they feel as we get closer to Friday."
This week the Dodgers have been working on fundamentals and execution to get ready for their Homecoming game with Platteville Friday.
"We will see a little bit of everything from Platteville," Busch predicts. "They have a good mix of run and pass, we have to be ready to be physical up front to stop the run. Offensively we need to establish a run game."
