Drawing on the best of our history

Dear Editor:
Unemployment is high, especially among young people who are having trouble finding opportunities or direction for their lives. The need for outdoor recreation, parks, trails, rivers, lakes, woods, and prairies has never been higher. Covid has us outside more than ever!
Joe Biden has an idea to help on all those fronts. President Biden will bring back a modern version of the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Wisconsin knows the CCC and its accomplishments better than most. We had the third highest number of CCC camps in the nation, trailing only California and New York. The CCC re-planted our northern forests, helped in disasters, and took on soil conservation in the southwest part of our state. They helped build our best and biggest state parks - Devils Lake and just about all our great northern parks. They provided vital construction in Milwaukee's large park system. My dad was in the CCC in the 1930's and I see the hard work of him and the many other young people in so many places around our state.
The same needs exist now all across the state. A modern CCC will teach skills and a work ethic for thousands of our young people, building their confidence and success. By all accounts -- studies and the memories of many Americans -- the CCC was one of the most successful and popular government programs of all time. Joe Biden has promised to draw on the best of our history to face today's huge challenges.
Sincerely,
Peter Bock
