For 31 of the 36 minutes the River Valley boys basketball team was on the court in a SWC game with Lancaster those watching saw the best basketball the Hawks have played this season.
But the other five minutes created some anxious moments as Lancaster crept back into the game.
But even with 15 points on five late three pointers by Flying Arrows guard Dawson Bowen the Hawks were able to get enough stops to finish off Lancaster and earn a 65-57 win.
Most of the game Bowen was left out of the scoring courtesy of some intense defensive pressure from Tyler Nachreiner who occasionally drew a breather from Will Jewell and Brandon Springer. Their defensive work limited the prolific Arrows scorer to seven points.
Then came the lights out performance that netted Bowen 22 points. Nineteen of those came the second half after Nachreiner limited him to only a three pointer the first half.
Aaron Murphy, who totaled 10 for the game, also had a hot streak the second half with eight.
But the solid play by the Blackhawks more than overshadowed the hot streak by Bowen.
"The first half and the first 13 minutes of the second half was the best basketball we have played all season," said River Valley coach Luke Thatcher. "We were patient, used our spacing, got post touches and went inside out. We also shot well and we didn't rely on the three pointer. We did a good job of being smart when we attacked the basket."
Add to that some play in beast mode by Josh Maier who had a great night shooting and rebounding as he controlled the inside. Maier finished with 20 points, 13 of them the second half.
"Josh played out of his mind," Thatcher said as the senior forward put in seven of 12 shots, six of eight free throws and pulled down 13 rebounds.
"We shot well overall and only took one three point try the second half," Thatcher said as the Hawks put in 22 of 42 tries for 52%.
Jewell added 12 points with a three for six from the floor and six of nine free throws.
Joe Ryan's 13 completed the double figure trifecta by the Hawks. He was three of seven from the floor and seven of 10 from the line.
"Joe did a good job getting to the rim," said Thatcher.
"We struggled the last few minutes of the game because we got a little impatient, took some poor shots and didn't do a good job handling their pressure," Thatcher said.
And, Bowen got hot.
Bowen was seven for 16 overall and six of 12 from three point range.
"We led pretty much the whole game and held them off at the end," Thatcher said. "We left it out on the floor."
