Cardinal girls nipped by Potosi/Cassville

Highland's girls basketball team was in a position to tie the game with Potosi/Cassville down three with 35 ticks left on the clock.
That calls for a three pointer....right?
That was Highland's thought process and it would have worked except for a couple three ball tries rattling in and out. Then when the Cardinals had to foul the combined P/C team made their throws and finished out with a 47-43 win in Six Rivers West action Thursday.
P/C, behind eight points from Anna Kartman, had a six point lead at the half at 18-12. But the Cardinals went to work in the final 18 minutes and came back to take a one point lead.
The two teams exchanged leads until Sydney Fecht struck from long range with a pair of threes and the Cardinals were forced to play catch-up the rest of the way.
"It was a good game," said Highland coach Josh Tarrell. "We just came up a little short."
Lilly Post and Kartman both totaled 14 points to lead the co-op and Fecht put in 11. Post had 10 of her points the second half and Fecht added nine in the same time frame.
Katilyn Esser led the Cardinals both in scoring and on the boards. She had a nine point second half and finished with 13.
Meg Tarrell had the hot hand from long range with a trio of three points on the way to 11 points.
The Cardinals also found themselves in foul trouble and were forced to change their man to man defense to a 2-3 zone. That move suited Fecht in her three point shooting with her pair of treys and Jessica Noonan who drained one.
The Cardinals eventually lost starter Megan Mueller to fouls and Katelyn Mueller had four which limited her play in the second half.
"We are two pretty evenly matched teams," said Josh Tarrell. "We will be looking forward to a return game on our home court."
