Deep Pointers run past Panthers

With Ella Chambers Chambers dogging Iowa-Grant's leading scorer Oliva Liddicoat all over the court the first half and Mallory Lindsey lights out from long range for five three pointers it didn't take long for Mineral Point to outdistance the Panthers 86-60 in a SWAL game Tuesday.
Lindsey ended up with 17 markers to lead a contingent of 11 girls who scored in Mineral Point's win. She was joined by Blair Watters who scored 25 and Chambers who added 13.
Liddicoat had eight points the first half for the Panthers then got loose for 21 the second to lead all scorers with 29. Logan Hubbard put up 15 for a second Panther in double figures.
"Ella did a fantastic job on Liddicoat," said Pointer coach Mike Keyes as she keyed the tight man to man defense.
"Blair Watters was also very active for us and ran the floor well. Mallory had four of her three pointers the first half," Keyes added as the Pointers raced to a 48-24 lead.
Nicole Johnson had nine points for the Pointers, seven the first half, as the starters spent much the second half on the bench.
"We had to pick our poison," said Iowa-Grant coach Dan Liddicoat. "We either had to hold down Johnson or focus on their shooters."
The decision was made to stop Johnson and the Panthers used a sagging zone defense to do so.
"We were able to hold Johnson down but the zone opened up the outside shot and they hit them," said Liddicoat.
"Mineral Point is just too deep for us," he said, especially with the Panthers missing two players, one who was sick and another with a concussion.
"We were short players but that is not an excuse," said Liddicoat. "They got to us with their pressure and caused us to turn the ball over too much."
"We scored 60 points and that is usually enough to win a high school basketball game," Liddicoat said. "But certainly not when the other team scores 86. They are a good team with depth and they showed it."
Liddicoat said freshman Alexis Vavricka had a good game with eight points and eight rebounds and was pleased with how aggressive she played.
The Panthers are at Fennimore Friday while the Pointers are at Darlington.
