Mineral Point's 6-2 senior forward Nicole Johnson is not a very well kept secret anymore.
She wasn't when she won the state high jump last year for the Dodgeville-Mineral Point track team.
She wasn't when she was a top volleyball player in the SWAL and for the Pointers.
And she hasn't been when she has been the leading scorer for the Mineral Point girls basketball team this winter.
So it is no wonder that teams are starting to work on taking her away from the Pointer attack.
Barneveld is the latest team to give their attention to Johnson and they had bodies around her the entire game in the Golden Eagles tournament Saturday.
That move worked in terms of holding Johnson to seven points. But it did not work when the Pointers began raiding the net from outside.
Thirteen three pointers later the Pointers had rolled to a 72-39 win over Barneveld in the final game of the holiday tournament.
A head injury the night before in the Richland Center game to Macy Aschliman caused Mineral Point coach Mike Keyes to decide with her stitches she should have the night off so he inserted Ivy Lawinger into the starting line-up. Lawinger responded with a 17 point outing and five three pointers.
"She has been coming off the bench and getting double figures," Keyes said. "It was her third double figure game of the season."
The three pointers raining through the hoop weren't exclusive to just Lawinger. Mallory Lindsey and Ella Chambers both chipped in four each to help the Pointers pull away.
Chambers paced the Pointers with 21 points with Lawinger's 17 and Lindsey's 15 giving them three in double figures.
Johnson was involved with the offense by her feeds to the outside which allowed the Pointers to have an inside-outside game.
"They zoned us and changed up their defenses," Keyes said about the Golden Eagles. "Barneveld played very hard."
The Pointers also had a good night on the boards with Blaise Watters controlling that part of the game.
"She really rebounded well," Keyes said. "She was well into double figures rebounding and was a real beast on the boards."
"It was a good team win and everyone who got on the floor contributed," Keyes said. "We shot it well, we cut down our turnovers and rebounded better. We are headed in the right direction."
Barneveld coach Chris Thousand said the 13 three pointers and a 16 rebound difference were the deciding factors in Mineral Point's win.
"They controlled us in those areas," Thousand said.
The Eagles were led by Morgan Schult with 12 ponts and four rebounds. Leah Marx and Jacey Spring both hit double figures with 10.
The Eagles head to Rio for a non-conference game Friday. The Pointers go to Southwestern Friday for a SWAL match-up.
