Cardinals make second half lead stand up for win over Vikings

The one thing that Highland boys basketball coach Shaun Reuter took away from the 67-60 crossover win over Pecatonica was his team's efficiency.
"We had more assists than turnovers. We shot 50% from the floor and were seven for 15 from three point," Reuter said. "We were pretty efficient overall."
Both teams fought their way to a 28 all tie at halftime with the Vikings having the lead until the Cardinals made a run just before half to tie it. Highland pulled away by five at the start of the second half and maintained the lead.
"We also made our free throws down the stretch," Reuter said. The Cardinals were six of nine from the line for the game with leading scorer Grant Hying three for four down the stretch.
Hying finished with 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds against the bigger Vikings.
"Grant is only six feet tall but he jumps well and was quicker getting off the floor than Pecatonica's big men," said Reuter.
The Cardinals also got double scoring from Max Oleson with 12 and Justin Miller with 10. They made seven three pointers as a team.
The big man for the Vikings, 6-5 Bo Hendrickson, led all scorers with 18 points and sophomore guard Hunter Enloe added 13.
It was Enloe who got the Vikings untracked in the first half when he scored all of his points.
"We concentrated on shutting Enloe down the second half," Reuter said giving credit to Jadyn Halverson and Miller for their defensive work. Those two also led the second half scoring with eight and 10 points.
"Hunter carried us some early before they made their adjustments," said Pecatonica coach Matt Fink. "They got the lead in the second half, maintained it and hit their free throws down the stretch."
The first time the two teams met in regular season non-conference play the Cardinals won 68-45.
"I look at this game as one we showed we have improved," Fink said.
Next up for the Cardinals is a trip to Potosi Friday.
"That will be a big game," Reuter said. "Last time we played we gave up the lead at the end of the game."
The Vikings travel to Barneveld tonight the host Juda Tuesday.
