Not only was it a good win as Mineral Point boys basketball coach Dan Burreson called it.
It was also a good team win. That was proven by the many contributions that came from both the starters and the bench in a 72-57 win over Southwestern Thursday.
The Wildcats are one of those teams who create havoc whenever they can for their SWAL opponents and Thursday they were armed a ready with a variety of weapons.
Offensively it was Peerson Kephart who shot the lights out early with 17 of his 22 points the first half. His dominance ended with some fine tuning defensively by the Pointers the second half.
The Wildcats also got double figures from Jace Mess who scored 11 and Ray Runde who added 10.
Defensively the Wildcats threw a few varieties of the "kitchen sink" at the Pointers but they were able to react to them all.
"I thought we did a nice job handling their switching defenses and moved the ball well," Burreson said.
The veteran Pointer head mentor also was pleased with how the Pointers put a halt to the explosiveness of the Wildcats.
"We stepped it up in the second half on the defensive end," Burreson added.
But it was the offensive attack the Pointers were able to mount that ended up the difference.
Joah Filardo got loose for 26 points. Ian Keyes sniped away from long range and nailed a trio of three pointers while adding 13 points. Add to that a pair of 10 point outings from Liam Stumpf and Cameron Wiegman and nine from the fifth stater, Dom McVay and that sealed it for the Pointers. The output was not lost on Burreson.
"When we have four guys in double figures and another with nine points I like our chances," Burreson said. "Joah Filardo had a really good night offensively with 26 points. Liam Stumpf came through with a double double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. He has the ability to dominate the glass. It was also a big offensive night by Ian Keyes with 13 points, including 3 three's. He can be dangerous with his ability to shoot it. We also got a solid 10 points out of Cameron Wiegman including 3 threes."
Burreson added praise to others who contributed to the win.
"Leyten Bowers was fantastic defensively especially in the second half. I really like what he brings to this team," added Burreson. "Dominik McVay really got us off to a good start with a couple early steals and had a solid night offensively. We also received quality minutes from Bodie Bossert, especially in the first half."
