The Mineral Point Pointers took down the Riverdale Chieftains in dramatic fashion with a 62-6 win last Friday night at Riverdale High School.
The Pointers were led by Nolan Springer (182), Mason Hughes (195), Trapper Nafzger (126), Hayden Bakken (145), and Jimmy Tibbits (152), who all picked up pins. The Pointers also had decision wins from Bo Hanson (170) and Kane Gunderson (160) and Colton Cutts at 152 and 145 lbs, respectively.
Newcomer senior heavyweight wrestler Will Straka had perhaps the biggest match of the night, beating state qualifier Dawson Wilmot in a 4-2 sudden victory match.
"Beating a state qualifier is not easy, if I know him, he will not be satisfied with that," Head Coach Curtis Fiedler said. "It is a heck of an accomplishment, but I feel that he knows that he needs to continue to progress."
Also receiving a tech fall for the night was 132 pounder Tarrin Riley in his 19-3 match against Nick Stitzer.
"I thought the team came out strong and did a great job tonight," Fiedler said. "I was happy with the effort from the majority of the kids. We let a few of the matches slip away, but this is going to come with more mat time and being in situations where we understand what we need to do to win."
The Pointers host Reedsburg Tuesday night, with the first match kicking off at 6 p.m.
"Our next match against Reedsburg will give us a lot of opportunities to compete and I know kids are itching to get more matches in, as we only have so many opportunities this year," Fiedler said.
