Benton outlasts Cardinals in SRW test

What goes up must come down and when it is a rebound you hope it is your player who gets it.
The rebounds that came down in the second half when Highland played at Benton Friday ended up in the hands of a Benton player far to often. That helped the Zephyrs escape from a 40-37 halftime deficit and go on to hand the Cardinals a 73-67 loss in a Six Rivers West game.
Part of the reason the Zephyrs were able to take over on the boards the second half was the fatigue factor.
"Our press worked well the first half but our lack of depth showed up and we got tired," said Highland coach Shaun Reuter. "I don't feel like we can press the whole game."
But they can score.
Maximus Oleson led the Cardinals with 24 points. His 15 the first half helped Highland to its lead at intermission.
Justin Miller chipped in 12 with nine the first half.
Isaac Michek and Weston Frost both added nine. Michek contributed seven in the first half run and Frost got all of his the second 18 minutes.
Rex Blaine's 21 paced Benton. Dom Cummins added 18 points and Chad Haffele put in 12 with Nick Brant adding 11.
"I thought offensively we were pretty good," Reuter said. "We shot the ball really well."
The fade in rebounding the second half is something the Cardinals will work on.
"The biggest concern I have from Friday night and moving forward is rebounding," Reuter said. "I feel that we could have won by 15 if we would stop giving up offensive rebounds. They have one kid who is about 6'3" but other than him they have no size. They just wanted the rebound more than we did."
Reuter will have the Cardinals improved in that area going forward.
"We will be doing a few rebounding drills in practice this week," he said.
The Cards also saw their defense get into trouble when the tired factor set in.
"The first half we held the Cummins kid who scored 35 against Cassville to two free throws but he ended up with 18," Reuter said. "Justin Miller was the main one to guard him."
The Cardinals swing back into action tonight with Senior Night on vs Cassville and then will have Parents Night Saturday vs Albany.
