Pointers open season with convincing win over Riverdale

By Levi Zimmerman
The Pointer boys basketball team opened up the 2020 season with a convincing 86-30 victory over conference foe, Riverdale, Tuesday night.
Despite a late start for regular season play, the Pointers played strong throughout. Coach, Dan Burreson, feels glad his team could see live action. "After practicing against each other for a couple weeks it was good to get out and play against someone," said Burreson."We brought good energy and it was good to see everyone get playing time."
Leading the way for the Pointers was junior, Joah Filardo, as he shot 50 percent from the field with 28 points. 22 of Filardo's points came within the first 18 minutes of action.
Senior, Liam Stumpf, also got off to a fast start as he recorded all 15 of his points in the first half.
The Pointers built a strong lead and played at their usual, fast-pace as they closed out the first half leading Riverdale by a score of 56-17.
Senior forward, Ian Keyes, provided a threat from the perimeter as he nailed 3 three-pointers and notched 14 points.
Leyten Bowers found his stroke from the outside as well, as he sank two three's.
As a team, the Pointers shot 37 percent from the field for the evening.
Coach Burreson was pleased with the effort the team showed and hopes they can build on the momentum that was created Tuesday night.
"I liked how we came out and got after it; Now that we got to play, we have some things to work on," Burreson added.
"It was nice to get out and play against someone other than the junior varsity," said the coach.
The Pointers will host the Iowa-Grant Panthers Friday, Dec. 11.
