Pointers do some work at the line for the win over Cubans

Mineral Point's girls basketball team found a little piece of home in the Cuba City gym Tuesday.
That place was 15 feet from the basket more commonly known as the free throw line. That is the place where you get the ball with no one defending and it is just you and the basket.
Mineral Point found the opening in the rim enough times the second half to pull out a 49-47 win over the Cubans in both the SWAL and season opener for both teams. Their 12 for 21 was not great but Tuesday it was good enough.
Macy Aschliman, who was shut out the first half, got into the action the final 18 minutes with one of the two field goals the Pointers managed and added five of seven clutch free throws. She totaled eight points as her field goal was a three pointer, one of seven the Pointers drilled for the night.
Ella Chambers also liked that parcel of real estate as the nailed five of seven tries. She led the Pointers in scoring with 17.
Sophomore Kennedy Wenger put in three of her six tries down the stretch.
Fouls cost the Cubans two of their starters, both two of their four double figure scorers. Maddison Carl who scored 11 and Sophia Dougherty who netted 12 both collected five fouls forcing their exits.
Jenna Dailey scored 12 and Bailey Lutes 10 to also lead the Cubans.
Trailing 31-20 at halftime the Cubans turned it up a notch the second half and found success getting to the rim.
But the free throw prowess by the Pointers let them have the advantage at the end.
The Pointers host Boscobel tonight, Riverdale Saturday and Black Hawk Monday.
