Using their never give up attitude the Dodgeville football team found the end zone late in the game on a pass play.
Junior Casey Weier ran a perfect route and settled under a pass from sophomore quarterback Garrett Busch that resulted in six points.
The score came with a continuous clock as Dodgeville's opponent, Platteville, had rolled to a 55-0 lead. The Dodger touchdown set the tone for the final count which was 55-6.
The Hillmen established early they are a team of size and speed when 5-11, 200 pound junior running back John Goomey scored on a 44 yard run. The Hillmen ran free the first half with 27 first quarter points while adding 22 in the second. With continuous clock the second half Platteville added a final touchdown in the third frame.
Goomey added a second touchdown the first quarter on a one yard plunge and then struck again in the second quarter on a second yard run. Goomey also added a two point conversion.
Senior quarterback Tyler McClain picked out 6-2, 195 pound sophomore Devin Digman for a 13 yard pass that made it 13-0 early as Sean Day kicked the conversion. McClain also nailed junior Seth Milstrap with a scoring pass, this one from 26 yards out, to cap the first quarter 27-0.
Digman scored twice on runs the second quarter and Goomey once for the 49-0 halftime bulge.
The final Hillman score was four yard run by junior John Drefcinski.
Stats for the Dodgers included 90 yards passing on six of 17 tries by Busch. Matthew Pittz caught one of them for a 41 yard gain. Colton Rikli, Weier, Riley Crook, Branden Brennum and Jamison Allen each had a grab.
Pittz, a freshman, had three carries for four yards. Crook picked up 15 on six attempts.
Again it was too much size and speed for the undersized Dodgers who had several freshmen and sophomores see extended playing time.
"We have struggled with size and speed all year," said Dodgeville coach Josh Busch. "We don't have a lot of size or speed so it makes it tough up front for us. Platteville was able to move us off the ball and that allowed from some good running holes for them."
The Hillmen also brought a new dimension of defense against the Dodgers.
"They were aggressive off of the ball," Busch said. "They attacked and we were not able to stay in front of them for very long. We tried adjusting and keeping seven guys into block and we still were not able to keep a very clean pocket. Again, their size and speed up front were an issue for us."
"We have been forced to play some younger kids for the last couple of weeks," added Busch. 'With as many injuries as we have we had to put some of those kids into the game. Matthew Pittz, Lacardar Walker, Travion McLin, and Sean Reilly have done a great job filling in. They have been a bit overmatched in the experience department, but have done a nice job of working hard and picking up what we are trying to do on both sides of the ball. I am encouraged that they will continue to grow and be a big part of this program going forward. Garrett has done a nice job at quarterback for us when he gets a chance to set and throw. I have been happy with the way he has thrown the ball, and I think he has done a nice job of trying to lead this offense which is tough for an underclassmen to do. I also have to say that this group of seniors and juniors have done a great job of accepting these younger kids as well. We keep having to plug younger kids in and the upperclassmen have done a great job of helping them out, and making them feel comfortable which is great to see."
The Dodgers are on the road this week as they head to Prairie du Chien.
"I expect them to be just as physical as the last three games have been," Busch said. "We are going to have to prove that we can stop the run because they will force us to."
