Cardinal volleyballers bring home the gold

When the Highland volleyball team went to North Crawford Saturday they were one player short.
When they left a youngster filled in admirably and allowed the Cardinals to leave North Crawford with the tournament championship.
Senior setter Grace Pustina was unable to make the trip and for good reason. She was in her sister's wedding.
But freshman Harper Drury laced up her shoes and filled the slot in the two setter Highland offense. She and Estee Goodwiler put up passes all afternoon that more often than naught, ended up as points for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals swept through pool play with wins over Belmont, Viroqua and North Crawford. They won all three in two sets.
Scores were: Belmont, 25-15, 25-22; Viroqua, 25-13, 25-7; and North Crawford, 25-20, 25-22.
When it came to crossover play the Cardinals went three sets with Wonewoc Center and they swept Wauzeka/Steuben in two.
Scores were Wonewoc Center, 25-19, 17-25, 15-11 and Wauzeka-Steuben, 25-20, 25-22.
"The girls played tough all day," said Highland coach Maria Wineski. "Besides Belmont it was nice to see some different competition."
Belmont, like the Cardinals, plays in the Six Rivers West.
Wineski said play at the net was a key to the successful run.
"Our blockers did a great job at the net," she said. "We missed quite a few serves, but we were aggressive and racked up a bunch of aces. We worked hard all day picking up hits and running our offense efficiently. I was so proud of how hard they played all day."
