Both River Valley and their Friday Division 3, Level 2 opponent Edgerton showed their offensive skills to advance out of Level 1 of the post season and will test each other this week.
The Blackhawks rolled to a 42-0 win over Brodhead Juda with a balanced use of the run and pass and a defense that limited the Cardinals to only 27 yards.
Edgerton trounced Mauston 45-8 in their Level 1 match-up signaling the chance for a high scoring affair this week.
River Valley coach Tim Eastlick respects what the Crimson Tide brings to the football field.
"Edgerton is a very good team from the Rock Valley conference," Eastlick said. "They are very balanced in the pass/run game, and play very solid defense. We will continue to work on the little things that will help us to be successful."
Whatever the Blackhawks worked on before their match-up with Brodhead/Juda turned into a very convincing shutout win. River Valley amassed 444 yards with as close to a balanced scheme as possible. The Hawks ran for 216 yards and passed for 228.
"The boys came out and executed the game plan to perfection," Eastlick said. "They came out aggressively on both sides of the ball, and were hitting on all cylinders."
Junior quarterback Will Bailey was near perfect throwing the sphere with 15 of 19 completions, three for touchdowns. He also carried the ball in from three yards out to start the evening's offensive explosion and later hit Josh Maier with scoring passes of nine and 28 yards along with a nine yarder that went for a score to Jack Meixelsperger.
Bailey also handed off to Zach Gloudeman for a pair of scoring runs. The sophomore got in from the nine in the second quarter and finished the night with a three yard plunge to push the score to 42-0. Cayden Robson kicked six extra points.
Gloudeman was the rushing leader with 121 yards on 11 attempts. Roman Jensen traveled he field for 82 yards on eight attempts.
Maier hauled in eight passes for 134 yards with Tyler Nachreiner grabbing four for 65, Meixelsperger two for 27 and Jensen one for two.
While the offense was finding its way into the end zone the defense was pitching a shutout.
"Defensively,we were led by the play of Zach Gloudeman, Tyler Nachreiner, Will Jewell, Josh Maier, Brandon Springer, and Lucas Esser." Eastlick said. "The remainder of the defensive unit played at a very high level also."
Gloudeman and Nachreiner both had six tackles. Springer had four with one for a loss. Will Jewell had four with two for loss and two sacks. Zack Paulus had a tackle for loss and a sack.
One important thing was the Hawks were able come out of the game healthy with all hands on deck for Friday. Some of that was the chance to rest the starters and give the reserves some quality time on the field.
"Our reserves have gotten some well deserved quality minutes during our conference schedule and last Friday," Eastlick said. "We are in great healthy shape for the 10th week of the season."
Playing the Crimson Tide will be a new experience for the Hawks.
"We haven't played Edgerton before," said Eastlick. "They are a team that has shown steady improvement over the last 5-10 years. They played in Level 3 last year against Lakeside Lutheran."
Kickoff Friday is 7 p.m.
