Dodge-Point gymnasts win SWC

Miah Lemanski came up with two firsts, two seconds and won the All-Around Thursday to lead the Dodgeville-Mineral Point gymnastics team to the SWC championship held at River Valley.
Dodge-Point totaled 131.625 to top host River Valley/Barneveld's 128.500.
Next came Platteville/Lancas-ter/Belmont at 126.050 then Southwestern/Cuba City/Benton 123.025 and Prairie du Chien/Fennimore 107.475.
"We had another strong meet and the payoff was great - Conference Champs four consecutive years," said an elated Dodge-Point coach Julia Oellerich.
In talking about the events, she said, "We had a great showing on beam. Lily McDonald started us off with a stuck routine which led to a personal best for her of 7.95. Emma Steffes followed, and stuck her routine for a personal best of 8.65. Miah Lemanski also stuck her routine and took first place with a 9.0. It was a great way to end the meet and gave us some motivation to do it again at Sectionals this Saturday.
"At our last meet we struggled on vault. We had a few falls and low scores because of it. We knew going into conference that we couldn't afford those same mistakes, so we worked pretty hard on vault. Tessa Bockhop has been competing a new vault this year that has been causing some trouble, so we were excited when she landed her tsuk. Miah also had a great tsuk, which earned her first place in the vault competition."
Lemanski won the vault at 9.175 and the beam with 9.0. She took second on bars to teammate Tessa Bockhop with an 8.350 to Bockhop's 8.5. She was runner-up to River Valley/Barneveld's Lorisa Shatrawka on floor with a 9.025 to the winning 9.4. Her winning All-Around total stood at 35,550.
Shatrawka, a freshman, also was second on vault 9.050 and beam 8.7 and took third on bars 8.325. She was runner-up for All-Around very close behind Lemanski at 35.475.
Bockhop took third on floor 8.95 and was fifth on vault with 8.3. She was third in All-Around with 33.4.
Oellerich concluded by saying, "We are looking forward to Sectionals this Saturday in Platteville and hope there will be a lot of fans in the stands."
River Valley coach Alyssa Kuhse talked about her team's day saying, "With their high score of the season, the gymnastics girls accomplished what they set out to do. We wanted to come out ahead of the two teams that had beaten us by less than a point, and we did that. We finished 2nd to Dodgeville/Mineral Point.
"We started on vault, it was their best performance and high team score for the year. Sofia Sanftleben stuck her vault, and Lorisa Shatrawka flipped a pike yurchenko for the first time, both hitting their personal bests. This rotation set up the energy to carry us through the meet.
"We rotated to bars, and while the scores were conservative, we hit our second highest team score and the girls performed without major errors. We added a couple of skill connections this meet and the girls again hit their goal.
"Beam was our third rotation. We had just a couple of falls and still hit our second high score for the season, and Katie Forseth hit her personal best.
"We finished on floor, again hitting our second high score of the season. Katie Forseth again hit her personal best.
"The girls performed well at conference. They were calm, but excited for the new moves and connections they were performing. Doing so well sets us up for expectations for sectionals. At sectionals, we will have our conference teams plus Viroqua Area Co-op, Westby, and Reedsburg. The top 5 individuals and top 5 all-arounds qualify for state, along with the top two scoring teams. We have expectations going into sectionals, and hope to keep the momentum strong on the journey."
Sectionals is held at Platteville High School on Saturday, February 23, with opening ceremonies starting at 10 am.
Qualifiers will compete at Wisconsin Rapids on Friday, March 1 (Team) and Saturday, March 2 (Individual).
