Area wrestlers look for advancement to state

Six Pointers advance to sectionals
By Kasi Greenwood
Mineral Point wrestling travelled to Lancaster this past Saturday for the WIAA Regional tournament. After scores were calculated, the Pointers finished third with 200.5 points, finishing behind the Lancaster Flying Arrows, and the Fennimore Golden Eagles.
At the end of the day, six wrestlers advanced on the next round. In order to do so, they had to place second in their bracket.
"It kind of ended up the way I thought it would," Mineral Point Head Coach Scott Schmitz said. "I thought maybe on an outside shot that we would have a few more first place finishers. There were just a couple matches that didn't go our way, but that's the way it goes."
"I thought as a team that we wrestled hard Saturday, and that's all you can ask out of the kids," Schmitz added.
Unfortunately for Colbi Carey, Ross Lindsey, Trapper Nafzger, the chance to advance to next weekend just came up short.
"At 106, 113, and 120 I think the story all year is that we've been outmanned and that we're giving up just a little weight," Schmitz said. "I thought Colbi Carey, Ross Lindsey, and Trapper Nafzger did an outstanding job all year long. They were great practice partners for each other and they believe in the system that we have here. In the off season, we just got to commit to being in the weight room."
Mineral Point had two regional champions. Danny Pittz claimed the championship at 126 pounds in his victory match against Fennimore's Alex Birchman.
"I think he's focused and he's ready to continue on this year," Schmitz said.
Mineral Point's other championship came from 145 pounder Logan Schmitz in his match against Boscobel's Dakota Frasier.
"He dominated his opponents all day, and that helped us team wise in many ways," Schmitz said.
There were four other wrestlers that finished second, which granted them the ticket into sectionals next weekend. Caden Carey at 132 pounds came up a little bit short in his match against Fennimore's Aiden Nutter.
"I think that Caden needs to get a little more aggressive with Aiden Nutter," Schmitz said. "It's just going to come within himself and he'll bring it. We'll just have to take one match at a time from here on out."
The next second place finish came from Nolan Springer at 152 in his match against Owen Wolf from Lancaster.
"I thought that was a match we could've won," Schmitz said. "But we learned from it, and he came back in the wrestle backs which is hard to do when losing a championship. But Nolan did, and he gave himself a second chance to advance to the state tournament."
Mason Hughes also finished second in the 160 pound finals match against Fennimore's Maguire Fitzgerald.
"We had our chance to win, and we just have to decide if we want to commit to a ride or let him go and take him down," Schmitz said. "Mason had a good tournament and going into sectionals we have some tough draws, but he's just got to come out and battle."
The next second place finish came from Garrett Ward at 285 pounds in his match against Darlington BlackHawk wrestler Leif Bredeson.
Garrett had a great tournament," Schmitz said. "But he kind of made a mistake in the finals and got pinned. He's going have to give himself a good chance this weekend."
Unfortunately for 170 pound senior Kyle Vondra, his wrestling career concluded at regionals.
"He just had a rough tournament," Schmitz said. "I felt that Kyle was a kid that could've gotten out. He just had a tough first match, and it kind of snowballed after that. It's hard to see a senior not make it out of Regionals."
For the other wrestlers who do not advance, Schmitz still had great praise for all of them as they helped to score major team points for the Pointers.
"We just have to commit to working hard in the off season," Schmitz said.
This weekend the Pointers hold down the fort, as they host the Division 3 WIAA Sectionals on Saturday February 16.
"With six guys making it through to next weekend, hopefully we can get all six guys to the state tournament," Schmitz said.
River Valley sends six to Sectionals
By Abigail Ruckdashel
The River Valley Blackhawk wrestling team participated in the WIAA Regional Tournament on Saturday, February 9 as a first step in qualifying wrestlers for the 2019 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament. The Blackhawks qualified six wrestlers for the next round, the WIAA Sectional Tournament to be held on February 16, and placed second as a team.
The six wrestlers to qualify for the Blackhawks were Jimmy Jennings at 113 lbs, Rowen Wipperfurth at 132 lbs, Devan Alt at 138 lbs, Cayden Robson at 160 lbs, Shane Liegel at 182 lbs, and Brock Mahoney at 195 lbs.
"I think we are in a good place for next week's tournament. We just have to show up and do our jobs," Co-Head Coach Curtis Fiedler said.
Jennings won two close matches to win the weight class and qualify for sectionals. He picked up a close 2-1 decision over Tristen Gilbertson of Belmont/Platteville and another close 4-3 decision in the finals over Matt Rogge.
"Jennings was on fire," Coach Fiedler said. "I think this is the type of momentum he can build off of heading into this Saturday."
Wipperfurth started his day with a 45 second pin over Ethan Steinhoff of Mount Horeb in the semifinals. He then went on to pick up a 5-2 decision over Warrick Wolf of Richland center to also win his weight class and qualify for sectionals.
Alt began with two pins in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. Alt pinned Jack Dougherty of Dodgeville in 5:46 and Brady Johnston of Belmont/Platteville in 3:00. Alt would lose a close 5-4 battle to Prairie du Chien's Traeton Saint, a 2018 state place winner, in the final round to take 2nd place. He would not be challenged to a wrestle back as he had already defeated the third place finisher in Johnston to officially qualify for sectionals.
"Devan had a great day, and I think he is finally starting to have confidence in himself and realizing he is one of the guys to beat," Coach Fiedler said. "Traeton Saint is an obviously good wrestler and Devan had him against the ropes."
Robson would breeze through the competition to qualify for the sectional tournament and winning his weight class without a hitch. Robson pinned Cuba City/Benton/Southwestern's Corwin Emery in nine seconds in the semifinal round as well as Prairie du Chien's Isaac Avery in 37 seconds in the final round.
Liegel continued his winning ways, remaining undefeated and winning both regional matches by pin.Liegel pinned Gerardo Garcia of Cuba City/Benton/Southwestern in 41 seconds in the semifinals and Dodgeville's Joey Recob in 1:24 to claim the 182 lbs title and qualify for sectionals.
"Our other champions [Shane, Rowen and Cayden] did a really great job as well. I loved their effort," Coach Fiedler said.
Brock Mahoney was the sixth and final Blackhawk to qualify for sectionals. Mahoney won a 3-0 decision over Prairie du Chien's Luke Wright. Mahoney was pinned in the final round by Belmont/Platteville's Will Schaefer. Mahoney also would not be challenged to a wrestle back as he had already beaten the third place finisher in Wright, to officially claim his place in the sectional bracket.
"Brock did a great job in the semifinals, and just got caught in the finals," Coach Fiedler said. "It's one of those things that happens, but knowing Brock, he has the mindset to comeback from it at Sectionals."
River Valley will head to sectionals this Saturday, February 16. Action begins at 11a.m. at Adams-Friendship High School. Wrestlers that place in the top three qualify for the 2019 WIAA Individual State Tournament beginning Thursday, February 21 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Hennessey is lone I-G/H qualifier
The Iowa-Grant/Highland wres-tling team participated in the WIAA Regional Tournament on Saturday, February 9 as a first step in qualifying wrestlers for the 2019 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament. The Panthers qualified just one wrestler for the next round, the WIAA Sectional Tournament to be held on February 16, but five more missed qualifying by just one place.
The one wrestler to qualify for sectionals was Drew Hennessey at 220 lbs. Hennessey is the defending state champion and is currently 34-1 on the year. Hennessey breezed through the competition pinning Ethan Esser of River Ridge/Cassville in 22 seconds in the semifinals as well as Fennimore's Brayden Leffler in 2:29.
"It was a very tough Regional. We definitely had our work cut out for us," Head Coach Ryan Allen said. "It was great watching Drew dominate again on his way to a championship. He is really on a roll right now and it's really fun to watch him go out there with a plan and execute it.
Mason Welsh, Alec Zimmer, Andrew Winders, Cal Dorota, and Donald Laufenberg were all within one match of qualifying and will be called to participate if something happens to one of the two higher place winners before Saturday.
"Overall I thought we wrestled pretty well as a team. I definitely would have liked to have more guys qualify for sectionals, but we got beat by better wrestlers. Hopefully next year, after a summer of lifting and wrestling we will have closed that gap.
Sectionals begin at 11am at Mineral Point High School.

Three Dodgers on to sectional
By Kasi Greenwood
The Dodgeville wrestling team participated in the WIAA Regional Tournament on Saturday, February 9. It now comes down to each individual wrestler. In order to qualify for the sectional tournament this weekend, wrestlers had to finish in the top two in their bracket.
Three Dodgers were able to do so were Tanner Bell, Riley Crook, and Joey Recob.
"I was happy to get three wrestlers through to Sectionals," Head Coach Ryan Lord said. "Prior to Tyler suffering his concussion, I thought we had a pretty good shot at advancing four. We had some other wrestlers who I thought had a chance to advance, but would have to beat some wrestlers who had recently beaten us."
Tanner Bell was able to receive a championship at 170 pounds. His day began with a bye in the first round, then defeating Cuba City/Southwestern/Benton's Bradley Goffinet by a decision of 7-6. In the finals, Bell was able to defeat Mount Horeb's Jared Leuzinger with a fall of 2:55.
"Tanner had a great day in winning a Regional title in his first competition down a weight class to 170," Lord said. "It was actually his first tournament title, so it's great to see him hitting his peak at the right time."
Riley Crook, Dodgeville's 152 pounder placed second overall. His day began by facing off with Dylan Baccan of Mount Horeb, whom he defeated via tech fall match. He then claimed a decision victory match over Shaedyn Lane of Cuba City/Southwestern/Benton by a score of 4-2. He then faced off in the finals with Prairie du Chien's Bradyn Saint. He came short to him by a decision match scoring 8-5.
"Riley also had a great tournament," Lord said. "He beat a very good wrestler in Cuba City's Shadeyn Lane to reach the finals against Bradyn Saint. I thought Riley wrestled an impressive match and was close to pulling off the win."
Joey Recob also dropped down a weight class to 182, who has been all year at 195. He was able to earn a bye in the first round, then defeating Zach Swiggum of Prairie du Chien with a solid pin timed at 3:12. However in the finals, he met with River Valley reigning champion Shane Liegel, who sealed the deal for his championship with a 1:24 pin.
"Although it means squaring off against one of the most dominant wrestlers in the state in Shane Liegel, I think it's going to be the best weight for Joey," Lord said. "He's been wrestling great lately, and I feel good about all three of our wrestlers advancing to the State Tournament."
This weekend the Dodgers travel to Adams-Friendship for the WIAA Division 2 Sectional Tournament. First round of wrestling begins at 11 a.m.
