Pointer wrestling falls to the Golden Eagles

This past Friday, the Pointers travelled to Fennimore High School to face off with the Golden Eagles. This matched determined who would reign as the SWAL Conference Champions.
After some intense wrestling matches on both sides, the Pointers fell short to the Golden Eagles by a score of 40-22.
"We knew it was going to be a battle coming in, but we had our chance," Mineral Point head coach Scott Schmitz said. "We just didn't get it done at a few weights that we should have."
The match started with Mineral Point's Nolan Springer at 152 pounds, taking on Eagle Nick Blaschke. Springer came ahead with a win by decision of 4-0.
At 160 pounds, Point's Chandler Workman competed against Trent Healms, but unfortunately Healms responded with a decision win of 6-0. The same pattern came for Maguire Fitzgerald when he defeated Mineral Point's Mason Hughes with a decision match of 7-3 at 170 pounds.
The next four matches saw Fennimore come ahead when Will Ahnen defeated Pointer Kyle Vondra by a fall of 6:36 at 182, Logan Klaas defeating Daniel Nordstrom by a major decision match of 18-6 at 195, Brayden Leffler defeating Mason Horn by a fall of 1:34 at 220, and Devon Kohrs defeating Garrett Ward by a fall of 3:36.
"When you're wrestling guys that are better than you, sometimes you just have to wrestle not to give up points, or not get pinned," Schmitz said. "They're like wins if you can do that, and we just didn't at a few weights."
Additional fall losses added to Fennimore's favor when Brody Lee defeated Pointer Trapper Nafzger (fall 4:42) at 120, and Aiden Nutter coming away with a fall of 1:17 against Bo Hanson at 138.
While the Pointers fell short to the Pointers, there were strong victories for them. Mineral Point's Colbi Carey received a forfeit to add six needed points at 106, followed by a strong overtime decision victory for Ross Lindsey at 113, major decision 9-1 match victory for 126 pounder Danny Pittz over Mason Lull, decision 4-2 match victory for Caden Carey against Alex Birchman, Logan Schmitz defeating Trevor Wanek at 145 pounds by 9-2.
"We had some great efforts from our seniors Caden Carey, Danny Pittz and Logan Schmitz," Schmitz said. "They battled out there against some of their best kids."
This was the last dual match for seniors Caden Carey, Danny Pittz, Logan Schmitz, Kyle Vondra, and Garrett Ward. The match scheduled for Iowa-Grant/Highland was cancelled due to dangerous weather conditions. This match was not rescheduled.
While Jimmy the Groundhog determines if he sees his shadow, the Pointers start post season and travel to Richland Center for the SWAL/SWC Clash conference match on Saturday February 2. The tournament begins at 10 a.m.
