There is a lot of talk about the need for discipline in the game of basketball.
There is discipline in passing and in taking the right shot at the right time. There is also discipline on the court when you are representing you team, your school and your community,
So when Fennimore's scoring leader Reid Larson picked up an ill timed technical foul with 1:06 left in the first half it meant a trip to the bench, not only for the rest of the half but for the rest of the game.
"Team rule," said Fennimore coach Troy Larson after the game who happens to be Reid's father.
When the Golden Eagles needed someone to fill Reid Larson's shoes the role went to Kellen Kenney who led the Eagles with 23 points, 12 of them after intermission.
"It gave others a chance to step in and play," Larson said about the decision to keep Reid Larson on the bench.
But the game was more than that one happening. It was a classic match-up between two very good SWAL basketball teams with the Eagles squeaking past Mineral Point 62-59. The game went down to the wire and had a fairly wild ending.
Isaac Lindsey, who was one of three Pointers in double figures with 15 points, was fouled on a three point try with just under three minutes left and calmly laid in all three tries that gave the Pointers a 57-55 lead, their first since the 15:20 mark of the first half.
But with 2:18 left Derek Kephart shoved in a rebound on a missed free throw, was fouled and turned it into a three point play with a successful free throw. That pushed the Eagles ahead 58-57.
Fennimore's Warren Adams and Mineral Point's Wes Berget traded baskets before Logan O'Brien iced the win with a pair of free throws with 1:15 left.
Kenney got scoring support from Adam Larson who had 12 and O'Brien who scored 11.
Liam Stumpf who was recently inserted into the Mineral Point starting line-up, led his team with 17 points which included five three pointers. Berget added 12, with 10 coming in the second half battle.
"I was pleased with our effort. We got behind early but battled back and gave ourselves a chance to win the game," said Mineral Point coach Dan Burreson. "A bounce here or there and the outcome could have been different."
Burreson said several players had key performances for the Pointers.
"Isaac played well and made good decisions. Liam continues to shoot the ball bwell. Garrett Wendhausen had a good night on the boards and passing the ball. Wes is starting to score in double figures to go along with his rebounding. Good offensive production from Blaise Watters," the coach said.
"I am really proud of this group."
Next up is a make up at Boscobel February 9 with 5:00 JV and 6:30 varsity.
The Pointers will be at Darlington February 18.
