Dodgers show improvement in loss to Baraboo

Dodgeville boys basketball coach Matt McGraw was looking for improvement from a first game of the season loss to Mineral Point when the Dodgers took on Baraboo Friday night in a non-conference match-up.
McGraw got what he wanted as the Dodgers battled the Thunderbirds basket for basket until time ran out and Baraboo claimed a 55-52 win.
"This was a hard fought high school game," McGraw said. "We showed a lot of improvement from a turnover standpoint. We only had nine on the night and it was the first time we have been in single digits for turnovers in a lot of years."
The Dodgers got double figures from three of their scorers. Sophomore Dillon Garthwaite led with 14 points with seniors Will Borne-Mumm and Jacob Buchanan adding 11 and 10.
But Max Koenig got loose for 22 point to lead Baraboo and also hammered the boards, giving the Thunderbirds the edge. Calvin Peterson also got into double figures with 16.
It was the shots that didn't fall that eventually cost the Dodgers.
"Some shots that normally will fall for us, didn't, especially in the early stages of the game," McGraw said. "Our offense was solid. We made extra passes to get really good shots instead of just good shots. "
McGraw also thought the Dodgers played well on the defensive end.
"Our guys executed the defensive game plan fairly well on Baraboo's leading scorer. We didn't have an answer for Koenig who controlled the glass most of the night."
But for the Dodgers it was a step in the right direction.
"We will keep getting better and I look forward to a few more tough games before we get into conference play," McGraw said. "Its important we improve and learn each night to be prepared to surprise some people in the SWC."
