Dodgeville's girls basketball team split in a pair of games this past week but took home a big win in a conference game at Richland Center.
The Dodgers had three girls in double figures and got a huge performance from JoJo Heimerl off the bench to tuck away the 58-46 win over the Hornets.
Olivia Argall led the Dodgers with 18 points with Amanda Ludwig adding 15, Grace Borne 11 and Heimerl 10.
"I thought that we played pretty well as a team against Richland Center," said Dodgeville coach Josh Busch. "We shared and moved the ball well for the most part on offense and were looking to make the extra pass. We finished around the rim as well as we have all year."
"It was good to see us being strong and getting to the free throw line as well," Busch added.
The fact four girls got into double figures was a plus for the Dodgers according to Busch.
"It was great to see that as we had been struggling to make shots in the first two games," added Busch. "It was fun to watch the girls play, defensive and they were doing a much better job of communicating. We were really able to affect the game with our defense. I think this gave us good energy on offense as well."
"Richland Center is a tough place to play, and to come away with a 15 point win is great," added Busch. "Not to mention we got the conference season off to a great start at 1-0."
Monday things were a little out of kilter for the Dodgers as the lost a non-conference test with New Glarus 49-45.
Argall had a productive outing with 22 points but no other Dodger got into double figures.
Dylan Noll, a 5-9 junior, led the Glarner Knights with 16 points and Shealyn Klosterman-Havens added nine.
"We struggled tonight," Busch said after the game. "We couldn't seem to get our of our own way for most of the night. We had an OK first half, but never really got comfortable in anything on the offensive end of the floor."
It wasn't much different when it came to defense, according to Busch.
"Defensively we really struggled with communication and transition," he said. "Again we were just not able to get comfortable in anything all night long."
"As much as we struggled, we were able to battle through and get the lead at halftime, which to me was a great sign," Said Busch. "Being able to find a way to do that is a credit to the kids and the effort that they gave."
The second half was more in New Glarus' favor.
"The second half we again struggled to get comfortable with anything on either end of the floor," added Busch. "Despite early turnovers we were still able to play well enough defensively to maintain our lead, but foul trouble got us pretty early in the half. I was happy that we had a chance at the end to tie the game. The kids battled and had a couple of really good looks that just didn't fall. Overall though I am excited about where we can be by the end of the year and this will be a learning tool that we can use moving forward.
