Cubans nip Pointer girls by four

It was a pretty solid performance by two of the SWAL's top girls basketball teams Friday until two things went Cuba City's way and paved the way for a 50-46 win over Mineral Point.
Those two things were a 22-14 difference in fouls that gave the Cubans 10 points at the free throw line more than the Pointers (15-5) and turnovers.
"It was a good game but we let it slop away," said Mineral Point coach Mike Keyes. "We will learn from this and use it to get better. We will work on getting tougher with the basketball."
The turnovers numbered 21 for the Pointers against a strong and physical team. In the end both teams played the game very hard.
The Pointers had the edge in three point makes as they nailed seven to Cuba City's three. Ella Chambers knocked down three, Payton Lawinger two with Mallory Lindsey and Nicole Johnson both hitting one.
The Calvert twins, Madison and McKenzie, combined for 23 points for the Cubans which was nearly half. Madison led with an 18 point outburst and McKenzie contributed five. Point guard Bailey Lutes, a recent transfer from Sun Prairie, added 13 for the Cubans.
Johnson led the Pointers with 15 and Lawinger added 10.
"We shot really well," Keyes said.
"Cuba City is a senior led team and the addition of Bailey Lutes made the stronger," Keyes said.
The Cubans went to a late press that also disrupted the Pointers' rhythm.
"We didn't do very well handling the press," Keyes added.
"Overall, though, we know what we have to do from here on out," Keyes said. "We are getting better.
In junior varsity action the Pointers put one in the win column.
