Cardinals stay the course to beat Cassville

The hard part for a young team is playing away from home for the first time.
A good thing for a young team is to find a way to win even when things don't go completely as scripted.
In a perfect world the good looks the Highland boys basketball team got Tuesday at Cassville would have fallen and the team would have picked up a relative easy win. But Tuesday was not a night the shots were find their way through the bottom of the net.
But the Cardinals stayed the course and picked up a 62-51 win with a fast start and a good finish.
Shawn Reuter's young squad got off to an early lead then saw the Comets find their way back in it to make it a two point game at halftime, 31-29.
"They fought back," Reuter said about the Comets. "We started missing a lot of easy shots."
While the Cardinals were getting the looks they wanted the shots were not finding the range from three point land but enough fell for the win.
The Cardinals saw Chris Fure bury a trio of three pointers and Bobby Roe get loose for 19 as the Comets executed the pick and roll. Cam Schmitz also helped keep the game close for Cassville with 10 points.
But sophomore Max Oleson kept putting up the necessary points and guided the Cardinals to the win with 22 points, 11 each half.
"He was our only double figure scorer but the rest of the guys were in the five to nine point range for a good balanced attack," Reuter said. Eight Cardinals got into the scoring column.
"This was a good test with a road game for the first time out for some of these guys," Reuter said. "We didn't play our best but give the boys credit. They found a way to win."
