Eagles hoping to throw away the book

If Barneveld boys basketball coach Tyler Sullivan would like to throw away a book in his collection it would be "The Tale of Two Halves."
That is what has plagued the Golden Eagles so far this season. They play a good half of basketball then things go south.
Last Friday it was at Fennimore when Barneveld trailed the hosts by eight at halftime only to see the second half go completely the other way.
Tuesday it was against another SWAL non-conference opponent in Darlington. The Eagles were within 10 at halftime, 38-28, then struggled the second half that went in favor of the Redbirds 36-6 and of those six points only two of them came from the field.
"Tale of two halves again," said Sullivan. "I felt we battled and competed really well he first half and when we would get down we would battle back.
He credited Dylan Oimoen and Trenden Barsness as coming up with some big plays in the first half. He also felt the defense was working the first 18 minutes.
But Darlington adjusted and sent 6-4 junior Carter Lancaster into the post where he accounted for 14 of his 27 points and Easton Evanstad got loose for nine of his 16 which turned it in favor of the Redbirds.'
"Lancaster is a great player and he took it to us in the post the second half," Sullivan said. "Evenstad also. made some big plays for them the second half also."
Cayden Rankin, a 6-6 junior, added 12 points for the Redbirds.
Barsness led the Eagles with nine points as he hit three from three point range all in the first half.
"They got us to turn over the ball in the second half and while we had some good looks we couldn't get anything to fall," Sullivan added. "On the flip side our misses turned into some easy baskets for them."
"We have to do a better job defensively especially when we are struggling to score," Sullivan continued. "We have played two solid first halves in our first two games but we need to find ways to tighten our defense and score."
But as one wise coach once said, "We don't lose. We either win or we learn" and that is Sullivan's philosophy as the season progresses.
"Every game is a chance to learn and that is what we will do after these first two games and as we head into conference play next week."
