Cardinals take Fennimore to OT before losing 38-32

Highland's girls basketball team worked overtime Monday but came up short in a non-conference battle with Fennimore that ended 38-32 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
Though it was a loss there was a huge upside defensively for the Cardinals as they held down junior scoring machine Brynlee Nelson until the overtime period. Cardinals coach Josh Tarrell alternated Megan and Katelyn Muller to chase Nelson and they held her to two first half points and three second half markers. Nelson ended up with 11 total points as she kept the ball in her hands in overtime and when the Cardinals had to foul she went six for six from the free throw line.
Claire Faulkner and Mariah Kopp both had double figures for the Golden Eagles to make up for shutting down Nelson. Kopp led the Eagles with 12 points and Faulkner added 10.
"Megan and Katelyn played great defense in taking Nelson away," Tarrell said. "Holding her to five in regulation is outstanding."
The game went back and forth with Highland leading 16-12 at halftime. Fennimore came back to send the game to an extra period with an 18-14 difference.
The Cardinals had a shot to win it when Katelyn Mueller entered the lane and put up a floater that fell off the rim.
Tarrell was pleased with the defensive effort but not with the finish.
"I was proud of the way we played defense but when you play defense you also have to come away with the rebounds which we did not do," Tarrell said. "We gave up too many second shots. If you don't get the rebound it is all for naught."
"We also struggled in the overtime from the field," Tarrell added. "We didn't get a field goal."
The two points in overtime came from free throws by Katelyn Esser and Rachel Miller.
"The difference in the game was rebonding," Tarrell added. "They destroyed us on the boards. We have to work on getting better position and getting the rebounds."
Meg Tarrell led the Cardinals in scoring with nine points.
The Cardinals (2-1) travel to River Ridge Friday to take on the Six Rivers West favorites.
