I spotted a familiar family in church Sunday, one who comes here once (maybe twice) a year. I asked the patriarch of the family how many years they have been coming here. He said "about 20." I told him it was really nice watching the family and kids grow up each year. Many of them weren't even around the first year!

Schurman's Cheese opened last Friday in Cobblestone Court, 233 North Iowa Street in downtown Dodgeville (former Aztlan Mexican Restaurant.) That's in the same building as Duke's Pub & Ale House and Cobblestone Coffee House. I stopped to buy some fresh "curds" and it didn't last very long at the office!

Our Saturday breakfast took us to Vicki's Cozy Cafe, just off the downtown street in Muscoda. We had been there before, about a year ago, but the waitress knew us immediately. I guess we leave a lasting impression on the wait staff! After we finished a big breakfast, on cue, the waitress asked if we wanted pie. They are pretty famous for their pies and have a pretty good selection. We all declined, but the Coconut Cream choice almost got Terry Carroll taking one!

Upland Hills Health celebrated the opening of its new "therapy center" in Mineral Point last Monday. It looks like a great addition to the community!

Put the date August 18 on your calendar for auction that is being held at the Dodgeville United Methodist Church to help raise money for the "feeding Friends" that is held there every Wednesday night. The event has completed five years of feeding people and is running short of funds!

Another date to remember that is coming up soon is Saturday, August 17 for the 2nd Annual Dodgefest held right outside our office in the Iowa County Courthouse parking lot. Music, food and refreshments start at 11:00 a.m. with a local band kicking things off. There will be a new band every 2 1/2 hours - five in all with things concluding around 11:00 p.m. There's a car show along Chapel Street too. Don't miss it!

I ran into former Dodgeville High School softball player Sherri (Roh) Bakken at Barneveld during a softball tournament there over the weekend. She had a daughter playing. She also helps with the high school program. We were reminiscing about some of her playing days at Dodgeville!

While at Barneveld I noticed a tent set up for EMS recruitment (see above photo). That's a big need for a lot of areas!

In conclusion to this column I want to wish a special niece - Shelly - a very Happy Birthday today (8-8)!
